So the story goes... long, long ago, UH went from Russell to Reebok to Nike. But Nike wanted all the sports and UH had each major sports cull individual contracts as they decided for themselves. The volleyball teams wanted to stay with Asics. In 2008 after three years with UH, Nike again wanted to negotiate to dress all teams, and UH was listening, but UA came in with the highest bid and won the eight-year deal. Not sure if Nike was ever bitter, they know if not them, then it's either Adidas or the newcomer UA. Currently, due to mostly the pandemic, UA has been trying to get out of the largest NCAA deals, like UCLA. They want out of its 10-year $250 Million UCLA contract. Not sure what is going to happen with that one. As a side note, as of March 2021, Nike reached a deal with D2 HPU to dress its sports teams. And who did HPU leave behind? Adidas. The story is, Adidas wanted out of HPU and wanted in with UH very badly, because they already were clothing some of UH's minor sports teams. Now they will dress all of UH's sports teams by 2022. UH has been said to be a cash cow for sports merch for a long time especially the football and both volleyball teams. I've linked the article regarding the history of UH's sports apparel contracts. bleacherreport.com/articles/43573-hawaii-warriors-ink-deal-to-better-protect-this-house

And no word on the status of Jolie Rasmussen. When she didn’t play beach I was told she was sitting out to get ready for indoor But on the release didn’t mentions her as one of the returnees. Have asked UH about it but haven’t heard back. Will update when can.
Cindy posted this on her blog. I doubt jolie is returning but I wonder what caused her to change her mind?

I thought she posted a farewell post on Instagram a while back and people in the comments were saying she has to come back and visit them. I know it’s not an official status

As much as we all would like a final confirmation on Rasmussen, I think at this point, its best to move on. We are less than a month out from first serve, there will be about 16 or so players. Hawaii will compete and I am excited to see Wahine Volleyball again

I’d love to see Jolie return for one final season, but I understand if she has decided that it’s not the best for her to return to the courts. maybe she can come back as maybe a volunteer coach…idk either way I haven’t seen anything myself that makes it official. but with that said, we must move on, we have talent still there and I’m just happy to see these girls actually having a season, august 27th couldn’t come any sooner.

It’s official. Coach Kaleo Baxter was on a local radio sports talk show this afternoon and he mentioned we only have 3 returning seniors from 2 years ago. Skyler Williams, Brooke Van Sickle and Kyra Hanawahine. No mentioned of Jolie so we need to let her move on with her life and give those returning our full attention.
I think we with be a very exciting team. Coach Baxter said it best at the end of the interview….in some spots we will be talented but young.
August 9th is the first practice so we’re over two weeks away from getting a glimpse of the Kate Lang, Anna Kiraly and the 5 true freshmen.

Who I think will start
S: Kate Lang OP: Tiffany Westerberg OH1: Riley Wagoner OH2: BVS M1: Amber Igiede M2: Skyler Williams/ Anna Kiraly L: Janelle Gong
So first things first, i don’t think Coach Rob is the type to sacrifice the flow of the offense for the sake of a bigger block running a 6-2, so i think we’re expecting a 5-1 with Lang and when dealing with a tough Leftside Hitter on the other side and/or our best server up when Lang is front row, Byrd comes in to block.
I could very well be way off but I think Gong having a sand season under her belt might put her ahead of Hanawahine at Libero, even though she did next to nothing last season, I feel like that was more just a lack of needing a DS with all the passing pins.
I think Kiraly comes in when they need to use the slide to mix up the offense. I think if Westerberg puts it all together on the pin this year, it could be what puts UH over the top, depending on how dominant she is there.
No idea who i WANT to see in the line up besides Mia Johnson if she can crush the ball more consistently than Wagoner

She seemed a litte slow for a middle last year, especially when compared to the more nimble Williams and Igiede. That being said, she can be effective in the middle against slower offenses especially with her blocking. I also think Akana may have some kind of role on the right. She had some good moments, and at times Ah Mow went to her ahead of Sibley when subbing someone at opposite. I'm really hoping Wagoner has gotten stronger and more confident. She had good form and good approach (it seemed), but she kept hitting out, hitting into the block or getting dug. She also seemed to get a bit flustered at times. I honestly don't think Byrd will see equal time as Lang. I think she was brought in as a backup like Kendra Koelsch in 2014. Not that it's a bad thing, since Koelsch contributed a lot, but I don't think it will be a Bailey Choy/Norene Iosia kind of thing.

Exactly, I think the role Byrd plays as the blocking setter will be what the team needs from her and she’ll be setting B side during Scrimmages but i think it’s safe to say that the setting isn’t as equal and high caliber as Iosia and Choy last year. Having those 2 both setting was the teams best foot forward. Gotta say though, it’s honestly ridiculous how deep AND young we are on the Rightside. Knock on Wood but i can see Demirtas not coming after all

For example, for question #2 her answer should have been, "It depends".

Why would Demirtas not come? She knew how many OPPs were coming in when she committed. It’s not like she was caught off guard with the addition of other players.
I don’t get the sense that Europeans are afraid to compete. For them, it’s a chance to get a free education and play volleyball. Not sure they have college volleyball in some countries.
