Oregon State showed promise today getting a set off of Colorado. Again McDonald and Szulczewski were bright spots. Hopefully Buckner or Vernon recover soon to assist them with depth on the pins. I watched that match and commented more than once that McDonald looked really good, especially on the slide. Colorado didn't seem ready to handle that. Agreed. OSU will need to get her the ball as much as possible moving forward.

Oregon state's Maddie Goings was nominated for Offensive player of the week, Grace Massey was nominated for Defensive player of the week, and Aliyah McDonald was nominated for Freshman of the week. Congrats to them.

Congrats to them. You do realize that most teams nominate a player from their team each week for each category, right? Looks like AZ and Cal didn't participate this time around.

Are you suggesting that being nominated wasn't a big deal then? Massey and McDonald definitely were worthy of their nominations in my opinion, and both could have won their respective categories.

I'm telling you that a team can nominate whoever they want -- no matter what their performance. DeLuzio from Colorado, she alone, had better dig numbers (35) than Massey did (30) for the weekend -- and I haven't looked at the other defensive numbers from other teams. DeLuzio also had more aces and assists (which isn't really defensive) and she didn't win either. With that said, I have said in the past in this forum that Massey is a great player and underrated (probably the best on OSU's team).

If DeLuzio stays as CO's libero she has a great chance of winning defensive player of the week at some point too.

Yeah, DeLuzio also won Freshman Player of the Week 4 times as a setter and won AVCA Southwest region Freshman of the Year as a setter too. I also noticed that OSU set the OPP/MB slide a lot in the 2nd match to make Ewert dig and get CU out of system (along with giving the ball to hotter OSU hitters), so DeLuzio probably would have had more digs if OSU set the outside as much as "normal".

Yeah CO will be much better with DeLuzio back this year. Agreed. OSU just doesn't have strength in the OH position right now, so the MB slide was their go to, and it worked. I bet DeLuzio will have a lot more digs in coming games vs. teams that use the OH much more.

Anybody else think Szulczewski is a solid pac12 freshman of the year candidate? She is also 100% going to be a super important player for OSU over the next 4 years

Anybody else think Szulczewski is a solid pac12 freshman of the year candidate? She is also 100% going to be a super important player for OSU over the next 4 years They are going to have to finish in the top half for her to have a chance and I don’t see that happening. They are better than people think but the Pac has some really strong teams. I think they are better than AZ, Cal and USC. She is definitely one of the better freshman I have seen so far.

Oregon State could have won both matches if Szulczewski set in the second set. Beavers lost first set the day before and came back to win the next three, but she was taken out they lost the second set today, but then won the 3rd and nearly won the 4th. Only problem was Tkachenko didn't play as well today as she did the match before.

Also, I heard the commentator mention that the injured OH Vernon should be back in a week or two, and that the OPP Buckner wouldn't be back for at about a month. It will be interesting to have Vernon as an OH option when Tkachenko or Goings are struggling. Commentator mentioned that Goings was nursing an injury so not at 100%-thus her numbers are lower.

Why wasn't Massey playing tonight vs. Washington? Turner cannot be the libero option. 7 serve receive errors!

Why wasn't Massey playing tonight vs. Washington? Turner cannot be the libero option. 7 serve receive errors! I agree with this. Massey is their best player. I would have never believed they could even win a game off WA without Massey. Especially because they are so much better when in system getting the middles going. Hopefully she is back soon.

Found out the reason Massey was missing. "Grace was exposed to a person with covid. So she has to quarantine - even though she is testing negative, And has been very covid cautious. This was the first set/match she has missed and is very frustrated not to be with the team." So, I guess she will miss two weekends worth of games. Bummer for OSU.
