I think the universities pay for the talent and production. I get that feeling too. I was wondering more about which way the "deal" with ESPN went. ESPN paying the school/conference for "content" or the school/conference paying ESPN for providing the streaming platform. or is it a zero sum exchange, with the school/conference benefiting via their fans being able to see their contests (especially road games) while ESPN benefits from those that buy ESPN+ subscriptions or whose cable/sat/internet providers pay for ESPN3 access It depends on the conference. I don’t think any conferences actually PAY to get their content on the ESPN streaming platform, but ESPN has minimum quality standards and it isn’t cheap to meet those if you’re a low major.

The universities pay for everything.

Nice even match between Coppin State and NCAT this weekend. FAMU went winless, but were playing against some great competition and Grambling St. picked up a win! Good weekend in HBCU volleyball.

Week 1 HBCU Roundup
SWAC did not do well at all after the first weekend. Only one team had a winning record, Prairie View A&M at 2-1, with Alabama A&M the only other team in the conference that won a match at 1-2. Prairie View’s two wins came courtesy of two five setters versus Tarleton State and Northern Arizona. Southern has not played any matches yet, with their first match at Dillard (La.) on Tuesday.
The schools of the SIAC have not started their season yet, and most start matches this weekend. Last year’s SIAC tournament champion Spring Hill College hosts the SpringHill Suites Invitational this weekend, facing D-II #11 Southwest Minnesota State and RV Oklahoma Baptist. 2022 SIAC runner-up Edward Waters starts play on Saturday at Saint Leo University. Albany State plays at the Georgia College Tournament this weekend, facing Young Harris College, Georgia College, Southern Wesleyan University, and University of West Georgia. Lane College will be hosting the Dragon Classic, facing Kentucky State, Dillard, Harris-Stowe State, and Talladega in two back-to-back doubleheaders.
There are four teams in the MEAC with a 2-1 record: Coppin State, Delaware State, Howard, and Maryland Eastern Shore. Of those four schools, Howard’s record stand out (loss to Georgetown, wins over George Washington and George Mason). Rya McKinnon set a program record with 30 kills in the five set win over George Mason. They also have the hardest noncon schedule, facing P5 schools Maryland, Georgia Tech, and Georgia. Coppin State took a set off Auburn, losing 1-3, and they have a tough matchup next month at UNLV. Delaware State faces Michigan State and Syracuse in a tournament this weekend in East Lansing, after wins over NJIT and Siena last weekend (before losing to Hofstra 1-3). Maryland Eastern Shore split the series 1-1 with UNC Asheville, and beat Alabama A&M 3-1 in Asheville. They’ll face Texas Southern at Tarleton State later next month.
CIAA has not started noncon yet. Fayetteville State starts off this weekend with a tough matchup in perennial D-II powerhouse Daemen at Clarion. 2022 CIAA runner-up Shaw starts off at Frostburg, MD playing Walsh (OH), Frostburg State, with fellow CIAA member Bowie State also attending this tournament. Last year’s CIAA champion Elizabeth City State plays this weekend in West Virginia at the Fairmont State Classic with Ursuline (shoutout 216!), Anderson, and Fairmont State.
GCAC is in the NAIA, but I thought I'd include them here as well. Last year's GCAC tournament champion Philander Smith started the weekend 1-2 at their home tournament, winning 3-1 against Jarvis Christian, but losing to Talladega and Southwestern Christian. 2022 runner-up Dillard is 1-3, with losses coming by way of Mobile, Webber International, and CIU (Columbia International Univ). Their only win was by way of Florida College (3-1). Fisk went 1-3 at the Phoenix Classic in Lebanon, TN, with their only win coming in a five setter vs. the home team Cumberland Univ. Wiley College went 0-2 over their opening weekend, losing to both Langston and Paul Quinn. They host the Wiley College Labor Day Classic this weekend, with John Melvin, Louisiana Christian, and Jarvis Christian all in attendance.
