Purdue's serve receive was pretty awesome. What? Rotation 1 was a nightmare. Gave up 6 straight points to end the 4th set. In the run of 6 pts at the end of the 4th set there was 1 overpass and 1 ace. Purdue had 3 reasonable and 1 more challenging attack opportunities. They mostly played not to lose the point after the attack error at 21-19. Saturday was marked by runs from each team when their opponents were sputtering. Without charting I would venture that Purdue's service reception over the two matches was a significantly better than MN.

Interesting that the replay has even more technical problems than the livestream did.

Watched it again. Gophers won 22 of the last 31 points and the night before was pretty similar. All Purdue needs is for Newton and Cleveland to not have to work so hard that they have nothing left at the end.

Purdue is looking like a top 10 team. Newton looks to be the offensive leader with an amazing compliment in Cleveland. Trammel is really good for a freshman. The back row is insane. Bush is good. Once they figure out the other left side, they’ll be amazing

I got the sense that UMN intentionally chose not to really put pressure on Purdue with the serve - otherwise, I can't understand how Purdue could 2 person pass as much as they did for the numbers they did.

What's the story behind Wisconsin's two 3-0 sweeps of Purdue; Boilers were missing players, right? Or is Wisconsin just that good?

This may have been mentioned but was Bayley mcmenimen there? I did not see her on the sidelines. I do not think she was there.

Need to figure out that 2nd OH position and find some consistency there to draw attention away from Newton out of the back row. Also need to fix Ro 1 where it's just Otec and Newton passing. Teams are going to go after Newton in that rotation, typically leaving Cleveland on the left, a sophomore on the right, and Trammel in the middle. That usually makes Cleveland the only out unless Newton puts up a perfect pass. Since Chinn was pretty effective as a back up for Cleveland while she was out, would love to see her on the court swinging rom the right during that rotation.

What's the story behind Wisconsin's two 3-0 sweeps of Purdue; Boilers were missing players, right? Or is Wisconsin just that good? Boilermakers were missing Cleveland and Newton was still recovering from an injury. But yes, Wisconsin truly is that damn good this year. I'm really looking forward to them playing Minnesota as I think the Gophers might be the only well balanced team that will be ready for them. Nebraska hasn't been tested enough and Penn State still seems a bit young to challenge the Badgers.

I haven't pored over the discussion, but wanted to comment on coaching: MN had a 9-5 lead in the 4th set not too long after (about 5') Purdue was up 15-12 Samedy had been stuffed, mistimed an attack, hit a ball into the net, and abandoned her position leading to an ace Hugh moved Landfair to opp and brought in Miyabe to give Samedy time to 'reconstitute'. On Friday he subbed Rubright for Myers without apparent hesitation He subbed Wenaas for Landfair the previous week when she was 'off'. I like the decisions to not let players try to work things out on the court when they are not working. Samedy came back in at 16-18 when Miyabe rotated out of the front court. MN then tied at 18, lost 3 straight for 18-21 and then rattled off 7 in a row. Could they have mounted this comeback without the substitution? I think not. And a coaching shout out to Dave Shondell. Did Purdue ever lose a point after he called timeout... all weekend? Yes, I think it really helped for both Samedy and Pittman, who had been subbed out for Myers, to get a little breather and re-focus. Hugh's bench is as deep as it has ever been and in the year of back to backs, that should really play to the Gophers advantage.

Who is the PA announcer for Purdue? He sounds like the way that little kids would imagine the devil to sound (and I secretly love it!). I could be wrong, but I don't think it's their regular guy. I listened to a bit of each broadcast again, and he doesn't seem to have the same announcing quirks that the normal guy does.
In past seasons, there would be occasions where a backup would work a match or two. This might just be that, I dunno.
I like your comparison, though! This guy does have that kind of voice.

Buddy of mine from Michigan Elite told me Chinn was unavailable this weekend - or at least had an injury that limited her. Ah, I thought as much since Koch went in for Ellis. I figured Chinn would be first up. Though I did see her taking practice swings during warm ups, so hopefully it's nothing serious.

Hoping Minnesota can close the gap as the year goes. Does anyone really believe that Illinois is better than Purdue, right now? I don't. So, I don't see the results as anywhere near comparable.
