Sheffield Presser. It's a good one. One thing I did not know was that Gio tore her Plantar Fascia in that first match against Purdue.

I'm sure there are varying degrees to such a thing, but a quick google tells me that "three weeks" is certainly on the short end of recovery periods for that injury. Gio, the Black Knight, indeed.

It may be the Sheff is not being very precise in his wording.

Probably something like that. First, there are 'secondary' bits of fascia in there, and maybe she tore one of those. Second, there are likely varying degrees to the "tear"; it isn't a binary "torn/not torn". Her's was probably more to the minor end. It also occurs to me that she might be worse off if she were a front row player doing lots of jumping, etc. Back row play maybe puts less strain on the plantar fascia, etc? Still, IIRC, she yelped audibly on the video stream that day. So it wasn't the sort-of slowly building fascia problem like I have going right now. But again, she is the Black Knight, so...

Civita is an icon. Would be nice if she finished her career with a national championship

Watching the Nebraska match again. Some things strike me. First, Nebraska played very very well. Outside of Samedy, that was the best the badgers have seen this year. As a group, their backcourt is better than McGraw - Kilkenny - Wenaas, even with Samedy making 20+ digs. Nebraska was really exploiting that same seam between Loberg and the primary passers that caused so much trouble in 2019. But Loberg also doing better on attack without the weight of passing, so it is a wash? Will they figure this out better by the regionals? Civita is so goddamned important it's hard to stress it enough. She made some simply amazing plays for someone supposedly on one peg. Hard to believe. And she is the unapologetic passion this team needs. Orzol really really struggled in this match. Even my brother who knows nothing about volleyball could see it clearly. It was the one thing he understood. Still, I loved how she fought and stayed in the game and made some key backrow plays the last two sets. She fought off some really gnarly serves. I'm not sure the badgers will face another serve that difficult this year - unless they face Nebraska again. Hilley is making some magic right now. She doesn't always connect perfectly with her hitters, but she is being brave and when she gets them the right set, look out. The transition game right now is like day to night compared to earlier in the B1G season. If Barnes and co can keep it up, other teams need to watch out. Also, where did this defense from Hilley come from? She is much better in that respect than in previous years. Smrek really has to work on the high OOS balls. Her attacks on those are tame compared to her in system attacks. She doesn't look like she knows what she wants to do in those situations. Demps is doing way better on those, but I think Smrek will come around eventually. She was much better on the block this match. This team has seen some progress but can still get substantially better. This all seems like a pretty fair assessment. Based on that match, I have a hard time thinking of Orzol as FOTY.

Big Ten awards are out.
Hilley is setter of the year, and Orzol is freshman of the year!
Rodriguez of Nebraska is Defense player (but not 'freshman'?) and Samedy is player of the year
Adding: Hilley and Rettke first team, Barnes and Robinson second team.

WOW! I was not expecting Orzoล to win FOY over Rodriguez. Well done, Syd & Julia! And congrats also to L-Rod & Samedy. Well earned, everyone.

A pretty embarrassing "oops" by BTN on their twitter announcement for Orzol.
"...freshman Julia Orzol who tallied 1196 assists, 255 digs, and 73 blocks on the season earning her ๐๐ญ๐ ๐๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐ต๐บ๐ฎ๐ป ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฌ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฟ."
(Those are Hilley's numbers)
