Can we refer to these athletes by their given names, i.e "Roddy", we aren't in high school anymore. I despise the use of nicknames for athletes. so because you don’t like it you think the entire board should stop doing something harmless ? Nicknames are definitely a big part of sports at any level. I could see if it was distasteful but it’s not.

Looks like they spread the love this year. But dang Caffey got slapped in the face with a Sportmanship Award. Yikes. WHAT DOES THE SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD EVEN MEAN “ya sorry we didn’t put u on a team but here’s a bone?”

However, it can make it more difficult for those not in the know to follow along. I think there are a number of ways that people comment on this board that make it so only the in crowd can follow along. I can see nicknames, or only using common first or last names, being one of those things. And I'm guilty of it myself when trying to make a quick comment during a match especially.

I would guess that the average Volleytalker in the B1G forums watches more volleyball games than the average voter of these during the season. Even though we might not know the same nuances as a coach (although several here do), I think a lot of these opinions are valid. (Subjective, but valid)
As we discussed over the years, you can’t go by stats where Libero position is concerned. The best liberos are avoided and are often not on the top of the stat line…..it might be a subjective “who do you fear most?” type situation between Barnes, CC, Roddy. At least from the games I watched, Barnes seemed the most avoided (but that could also be due to her teammates)

Yea I think sometimes people overestimate how much time coaches spend watching other teams outside of scouting and a lot of times that’s not really even mostly the HC. This is definitely evident in those avca poll ballots 👀👀 am I right ? vballfan17

I could see if it was distasteful but it’s not. My current favorite nickname going is for MSU's Sarah Franklin who is known by her teammates as "Frank the Tank".

WHAT DOES THE SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD EVEN MEAN “ya sorry we didn’t put u on a team but here’s a bone?” From the press release: "The students chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These students must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting." I've always looked at it as a way to get Rutgers on the board.

This is definitely evident in those avca poll ballots 👀👀 am I right ? vballfan17 Yes... it seems like coaches get busy and either 1. don't submit a ballot, 2. submit a ballot with minimal or zero changes, 3. submit a ballot with changes that make very little sense, or 4. actually take the time and submit a decent ballot (this happens maybe 5-10% of the time).

Probably happens after they see who made the two teams. So when Cook saw that Caffey didn’t make a team, he made the obvious choice. (I do think she deserved more though.)

Officially banning the nicknames Sheff, Izzy, Syd, Dev, and Donna for Badger fans then I don't mind nicknames but I like them unambiguous. Sheff is obvious. There is no other and also I hate typing "ield." I hate typing generally. It's not good for anyone if I type more. Izzy is the name she goes by - it's how she is listed on the roster - but I use Ashburn in general B1G threads, because there are lots of Izzys in the world. I usually refer to Hilley by her last name, because we have another Sydney these days. Sydney's are all over the place as well! And that's the problem. I actually had no idea who the Roddy referred to at first. Is that for Rodriguez? I can understand why you avoid Lexi - but in a general B1G thread best to stay away from ambiguous nicknames.
