Even without a national title, she'd probably be pretty happy winning the Big Ten, which is arguably difficulter than winning a six-match tournament. Hmmm. I don't know. B1G champions often have 2-3 losses. In a 20 match season, 3 losses is just a little less that 1 loss in 6, and the competition is frankly better on average in the NCAA. I mean, UW has beaten Marquette, Iowa St, Green Bay, Pepperdine, Illinois State, Weber State and UCLA over the last few years in subregionals, and I think many of those teams would have won more often than not against a lot of lower tier B1G squads in the same year. A top big ten team would have played no less than 12 matches vs better teams than they would see in first two rounds.

What would Wisconsin’s line-up look like without a platoon of returning seniors? Would they compete to win in the Big Ten? Talented, but pretty green. Probably not a B1G contender. Once again, you would have tremendous strength at middle. I think the opposite would turn out to be really good. But, no idea how well that team would pass. And, trading a 1st Team AA 5th year setter for a freshman is always tough. My guess would be: S: MJ Hammill MB: Danielle Hart MB: Devyn Robinson OH: Jade Demps OH: Lauren Jardine or Liz Gregorski Opp: Julia Orzol L: Not sure. Candidates would include: Anna MacDonald, Joslyn Boyer and Sydney Reed. NO Izzy in as setter or no Smrek in either MB or OPP? hmmm

I have never seen Smrek in a match. She looks like a hell of a good prospect. I just assume she is a bit raw. Even so, she would have to be awfully damn good right out of the gate to start in front of Hart or Robinson at middle. And, I would think it would be hard to beat out Orzol on the right side, who has seemingly played that position a lot in her young career and looks like she is really, really good.
Izzy is possible. But, I also feel like Hammill was always expected to be the setter post-Hilley and is the better prospect. Izzy is a great backup setter and great server. It was Hammill they used against Minnesota this year when Hilley was out with COVID.

We haven't seen Smrek at this level yet. Hart is proven - she would need to get displaced. Izzy will be serving and could be in the back row as a DS and taking second balls when necessary. She would compete with Hammill, but we've only seen Hammill set a full match, so hard to bet against MJ at present. Things could change.

You end up with the same percentages of winning, plus the problem that the NCAAs is a knockout tournament. You lose, you are done. That doesn't happen in conference play. I'm not sure which is harder.

So will cerame start over the other DSs there? Haley Armstrong is effectively her only competition. Cerame will see the floor either way, but it will be interesting to see if she takes the libero jersey.

Another transfer libero to the B1G will be announced soon. Hmm trying to figure out who needs one? McGraw is still around. Barnes returns. Otec returns with Hornung. I don't think Rose is replacing Hampton? I thought Grant was good for Michigan. Cox is coming back. Oooh, Nebraska?!
