So, what does everyone think about Big Ten standings after the first weekend of play? I think it’s pretty clear that Wisconsin is on a level of their own. Nebraska is probably second but who knows, they didn’t play any real competition and are without Stivrins and Hames. Ohio State looked really really good. Purdue struggled a bit, same with Penn State (although they came back with a vengeance after that loss). Minnesota looked about how I expected them to look. Michigan/MSU/Rutgers/NU/Indiana/Maryland all won but didn’t really play very good competition. Illini probably struggled more than they should have. Iowa did not look good. I think there are 4-5 categories I would rate teams in right now. 1. Wisconsin, maybe Ohio State? 2. Nebraska/Minnesota 3. Penn State/Purdue 4. Illini/Michigan 5. Michigan, MSU, Rutgers, NU, Indiana, Maryland, Iowa Thoughts? To be clear I did not watch every game, especially the lower teams, just going off stats/opponents. You might be giving Washington too much credit. I did not see the stream of the match but I heard it was not a great performance. Very possible - I didn’t get to see the whole match either, just highlights and some of one set. I guess it was just an assumption based on how good Washington was last year and how much potential Ohio State showed last year with a very young team.

I only question comparing Penn State's loss to a very good Georgia Tech to Purdue dropping one set to a very good LMU team? Those are two very different kind of struggles. I don't see them being on the same level right now, especially with PSU trying to figure out how to make all their new pieces work. I also think Michigan is a step above Illinois. 1. Wisconsin 2. Nebraska 3. Ohio State 4. Minnesota/Purdue 6. Penn State/Michigan 8. Illinois 9-13. The rest depending on the day of the week 14. Michigan State

Michigan State I, Having the bias of cheering for a team that did not perform well week 1, believe that the first few weeks won't actually reflect much this year (though the results count). Take everything with a grain of salt, as every freshman or sophomore played in front of their first collegiate crowd ever.

I think Wisconsin is clear 1, but besides that it’s really up for debate. Minnesota and Purdue have always been pretty evenly matched. I think in the end Penn State will turn out to be much better than Michigan, but who knows.

Have any of you attended games in multiple Big Ten arenas? If so, how do you rank them? This will be interesting. I would love to see a full rating from someone that has been to all of them. I wouldn’t be surprised if some schools that are NOT very good at VB have much nicer arenas. Like, I’m sure Iowa’s arena is much nicer than the Field House… although it depends if you value historic charm or updated facilities more..

The first weekend or the preseason is definitely not an indicator of how well a team can be by the end of the season. Just replying to the OP asking how well the teams look currently.

The bare shoulders and armored sleeves of Ohio State have a real serious warrior look to them.

Wisconsin *kind* of gives me Neb 16 vibes. Clearly better than everyone else at beginning of year but by end of year.....others may catch up.

Have any of you attended games in multiple Big Ten arenas? If so, how do you rank them? My home arena is the UW Field House. I've been to the Pav, Huff, and Devaney, though not to watch the Huskers...it was women's VNL. I think for physical facility, Devaney was probably the nicest. The student section in Huff was one of the most into-it student sections I'd seen. The Field House is OK and it's being worked on slowly and modernized a bit more with the video board. I just wish they had some seat backs in any of the sections. The Pav was also in the OK realm. Honestly, I don't remember much from that match because we ran late and it took us a set and a half to defrost from the below zero temps.

Biased, I know.
Of the rest, I've been to Holloway, Wilkinson, and Huff. I like Huff because it feels like you are on top of the action--stacked and packed. Wilkinson and Holloway both feel like high school gymnasiums, though nicer of course. The energy at Hollaway was off the chart last time i was there: 2019, I think, when they took out the Huskers. Wilkinson is a major upgrade over their former facility (which was almost embarrassing).

Have any of you attended games in multiple Big Ten arenas? If so, how do you rank them? Let me see... I haven't been to many since the late 2000s, but this is what I'll say of ones that are still currently in use... 1) Rec Hall - Penn St (didn't see the women play, but the men play here. Place is built for volleyball. 2) Pav - Minnesota (It's such an odd setup but really works well. It also traps sound really well) 3) Wisconsin Field House (It's a better basketball venue, but really fun for big volleyball matches) 4) Huff Hall - Illinois (similar to UW, but not as nice) 5) Holloway - Purdue (It's basically a HS arena... meh) 6) Jenison - MSU (just doesn't hold it's own with other older venues... I also feel like you feel the empty space) 7) Keen - Michigan (It's terrible... I hate the sight lines. It's just a super odd place to watch volleyball and feels super claustrophobic.) I've also been to St John Arena (tOSU) and Assembly Hall (IU)....

I don’t think Jenison has changed much since my mother played high school basketball there in the early ‘80s. Keen is basically a swimming pool.
