is wise retiring? or maybe even being contacted for pvf? didn't Florida tie for first in the SEC? and the final four will be held in Florida this year right? so weird. i wanna know what's up! Mary is 62/63, so plenty of years left to coach. IMO she has likely earmarked retirement once she wins a championship, which is obviously far from likely this season. She does have some strong recruits coming in '24, and I'm sure will continue to stock the cupboards in '25. Having two 2-year starters leave in the same year is a first, and definitely a concern. But I feel like this generation of athletes with NIL will be loyal to other things than a program for 4 years. Beason is out, but she has 6'6 Martin. Very different types of players (obviously size-wise), but Martin has a ton of upside and I think was a leading point scorer in Spring. Kelley was posied for a breakout year, but her numbers last year weren't off the charts for an M1 who jumps that high, and Mary has 3 very talented middles left who should seize this opportunity. It's highly unlikely a Markova-type will pop up this late in the portal, but clearly anything can happen. I predict 2md/3rd in the SEC this season, and they will somehow squeak another Sweet 16. this post now makes me really wish they had won in 2017... will she ever have a team that can pull of a championship in the NIL era? (watch me eat my words and they do it this year lol)

I personally think Martin can replace Beason. She might even be better, time will tell. Anna Dixon will also help some of that load & hopefully Victoria is at full health this season. Do we try to get another middle in the portal or do we stick it out with the ones we have?

Do we try to get another middle in the portal or do we stick it out with the ones we have? Agree. She will make freshman mistakes, but 6'6/6'7 with range is not a bad deal, and she might be their leading point scorer this fall. Beason, however, was a solid 6-rotation player, but Martin isn't ready for thet yet. I think Dixon can be a solid .250 attacker, and I think Victoria, if healthy, will do what she does best: absolute crush in some matches and lead in kps, and in other matches have 6 hitting errors in a row. I think depth is in question now with Hutson out (appaerntly ACL?), Victoria in recovery (not sure from what), and Gravlee's arm possibly not being ready. The Gators have AC, but she's undersized. MBs are much thinner without Kelley, so it will be interesting if Essix moves to the M1. She is a much better slide attacker than Kelley, but proved to be a very effective M2. Okammor got most of her recent reps at M1 and is good off one foot and at times proved to be a solid blocker. Thomas was highly rated out of high school, but with no playing time hard to assess her areas of strength. Guessing Essex at M1, Okammor at M2, Thomas off the bench. Takeaway: They need an OH transfer, maybe an MB.

I think Essix is the M1 and maybe split time with Okammor and Thomas unless one is proven to be the better

If it's ACL, she's been beat up for a while. Bummer for her. Meanwhile, Alec Rothe is really impressive. She could easily play middle, but her rips and size on the left side are quite something. Tremendous range. Reminiscent of Kerri Walsh:

Gators are fine as long as Stucky is around and the passing doesn't regress from last year. With the 2024 recruits, this crew could be final four bound.
As for 2023, Florida will always have elite arms. Now we have an elite setter. If the passing improves as expected with an additional year of experience for McKissock-Adams-Canaan-Victoria passing together plus the addition of our freshman DS, we could have an unexpectedly great year.
I'm also excited about the prospect of Thomas getting a shot at playing time. She was looking at 3 years on the bench behind Essix and Kelley. We could have easily lost her to transfer just for playing time.
We will miss Beason's back row attack the most (remember she rarely was in serve receive), but I think Martin's block and hitting efficiency in the front will make up for those points.

I mean, it hurts with Beason and Kelley but... I kinda don't blame them. Gainesville is lowkey a horrible place to live and with them not winning Nattys and such, I can see why they would want to go. Pretty disappointed because with people like Beason, I have to wonder if without playing at Florida they would've been able to develop the way they did to even transfer to Nebraska. But as long as Kelley and Beason are happy ig

I go back and visit several times a year.

Sorry, taking the warmth and proximity to water over cold, middle of nowhere and land locked any day.
