Yeah, Canada sucked. They actually can play better but they have had 3 weeks together and a whole new squad of young players who many have never played together ( and a new coach). They do need Alexa ( they are a different team with at least one more decent player) and any player who can pass! They will improve as the tournament goes on however, and this will be valuable experience for them. That’s what happens when 8 players retire just before the first VNL they would have ever played in. Guaranteed this team looks very different if Black is still at the helm or they post the position. Winzer is out of her depth.

I would have preferred Black and that coaching staff at least stay on for the VNL. It would have brought a little more stability for the program. I want to agree that Winzer is not at the same level as Abbondanza and Black. I am a little confused at Gray as libero? But, I think so far she seems to have realistic expectations for the team while still trying to push them. I’m just not sure she is the coach that can really capitalize on this VNL experience and push this team to a higher level.

Is there any possibility that Canada's just trying to use this VNL for development since there's no relegation? Play Gray at libero to improve her passing/give her arm a break? Also, many players are getting a ton of reps at several positions? Then they come out much stronger as a whole for next season? I mean no one really knows except for the staff but unless Gray is injured there's no reason for her to be at libero.

I have doubts about whether or not she can capitalize on this opportunity to push Canada to a better level. Abbondanza coached at a real high level. Winzer though coached an Australian team that very rarely played good competition. Not only are the players being exposed to a new, high level of competition, but so is the coaching staff.

Ultimately, having Gray as libero will only help her serve receive, which I think the whole board knows she struggles with. So in that, it can be viewed as a positive. But if they were really using this for development, the staff should be looking at putting Bujan or Snape, the players that are the future of the libero position for Canada, in the games for development. From a pure developmental lens, I don’t see how reducing games for true liberos would help the team in the long run.

It’s questionable if this is a long-term positive? I’m not sure developing one player’s weakness at the libero’s expense is justified? What if Gray is injured (more than her current minor injury)? I do think she wants to rest her arm. However, I hope she is at least used strategically for important matches, or what is the point of her playing in this year’s addition of the VNL? As you mentioned, the team might be better off having the two new liberos get reps. As an aside, I think Gray kind of enjoys playing libero. 😂

Even before that, she was not going to be playing a lot (to give her shoulder a rest?). Even so, the development of the new liberos aren’t being prioritized. It’s just kind of weird that she comes all the way to Italy but isn’t really playing?

I don’t know much statistics wise about passing etc. would you say Plummer’s numbers are good or bad?
