Sha'Carri Richardson ran a 10.84, which is pretty fast for a heat. It will be interesting to see her time in the final.

Also, Ryan Crouser just broke the shot put world record that has stood since 1990.

Reading up some more on Houlihan, it seems like the most likely explanation isn't that she was straight up taking nandrolone, as that's a steroid that wouldn't be all that beneficial to a distance runner. More importantly, it's a steroid that stays in the body for a long time and is also easily detectable on tests. No way would a pro athlete be dumb enough to take it intentionally. Rather, it seems likely that she was taking testosterone in low enough levels as to not exceed the maximum allowable level of the test. But testosterone sometimes can be contaminated with nandrolone if the lab making it doesn't have the best quality control (i.e. it doesn't properly clean the equipment after making the nandrolone, so trace amounts are left to contaminate the testosterone).

Agreed on all counts. She's still really young (she turned 19 last week), so I wouldn't be surprised if Mu adds the 400 for Paris in 2024. I'll be shocked if she doesn't turn pro after Trials. She didn't even wait until after the trials. I guess there was no real point in waiting. It was obvious to just about everyone. https://www.instagram.com/p/CQSk7c2F2BP

Sha'Carri Richardson just ran a wind-aided 10.64 in the semifinal, and she was celebrating with a quarter of the race to go. The final is later tonight.

True story from last night:
Me: Hey, I’d love to watch the track trials tonight at 10, what do you think? Wife: Fine by me. Oh, I wonder if my friend will be running? Me: Your friend? Wife: Yeah, her name is Athing Mu. Great kid! Me: Wait, what? Wife: She roomed with a couple of my kids at the Youth Olympics in Argentina, kinda took her under my wing. (Note: wife works with a national federation - not USAV, BTW - and has been a part of the US delegation at a number of international events). Me: Wait, what? Wife: Sure, we still stay in touch, she’s a neat kid, great sense of humor. Me: Um… Wife: Her, right? [hands me phone with photos of her arm in arm with Athing Mu] Me: Yep. Wife; She’s good, right? Me: You could say that, yeah.

After a "Wait, what?", I remembered that my friend had told me that she had been a gymnast most of her life and grew up in Houston.

I was actually disappointed that Sha'Carri ran "only" a 10.87 in the final (into a headwind). After her semi, I thought she was going sub 10.6.

Who will be the new fastest man in the world now that Bolt has retired? I thought it was Coleman...but he is sanctioned. So who can he be?

I think it will be Trayvon Bromell, who has run a 9.77 this year. That's the fastest time in the world in the last six years other than Coleman's 9.76. I didn't realize that the reason Coleman is banned is because of three whereabouts violations in a year. That's either really dumb or really guilty.

That was an impressive race for Jewett just over week after winning the NCAAs. A lot of collegians have really struggled at the trials likely in part because the two meets are so close together. Jewett just went out and dared people to catch him. Only one person could, so he's going to Tokyo. As for Brazier, it's definitely disappointing for him, but he finished several seconds behind the top three, so he clearly wasn't fit or healthy enough, unfortunately.
