Well, as I said in my edited followup, it's mostly that his times are probably impossible to be clean when so many other top sprinters have been caught. His situation reminds me a lot of Lance Armstrong, who also hadn't failed a test but was beating a bunch of other known dopers.

I know Fraser-Pryce and Sha'carri Richardson Hmm, I haven't watched a lot of men's 100m races recently, at least not at the international level (I've seen some college races), but it looks like Trayvon Brommell should be the favorite, as he ran a 9.77 a couple days ago. That is the fastest time in the world this year. Marvin Bracy ran a 9.85 in the same race. I'm really interested to see how Richardson does. She has the second-fastest time in the world this year at 10.72, and she's only 21 year old. She's been a superstar in the making since the lit the track on fire with a 10.75 as a freshman at LSU to set the collegiate record.

I can't prove that he was on PEDs, but I think the chances that he wasn't when almost everyone that he was beating was are nearly impossible. Similar to Lance Armstrong. Jamaica basically didn't have a functional anti-doping program. Runners spent their entire offseasons doing whatever. It was really bad, but they were basically 4th on IAAF's Hitlist for poor doping controls (after Russia, Kenya, Ethiopia), so escaped a lot of scrutiny. That's how bad it was other places. You can kind of hide in plain sight knowing they're not going to ban EVERYBODY. This is why it's hard for Americans. I'm not saying we don't dope, but USADA effectively limits how much they can dope.

Isn't track doping measures like super extreme? like didnt one of the gold medalists (in hurdles maybe?) get banned for missing a test

An American gold medalist hurdler was just suspended for breaking protocols. BUT Enforcement out of competition is done at the country level, so Kenya would call a month in advance and let people know when they'd be tested, and if they feared they'd be too "hot" they'd delay. Russia would just switch the samples..... Jamaica more or less didn't test at all for a while. USADA has its faults but is miles above its counterparts.

Right, and of course Marion Jones just went to BALCO and got undetectable PEDs. Granted, that's not really on USADA. I didn't actually realize this, but USADA has only been around since 2000. So I guess I can't hold them responsible for FloJo's obvious doping.

That's interesting. im surprised they're allowed to do it independent of whoever the governing body is

So I guess I can't hold them responsible for FloJo's obvious doping. The 80s were really bad everywhere. There's a significant movement to reset all world records to go back to some time in the 00s when there was at least some semblance of protocols in place and they still have frozen samples.

I also think the IAAF wasn't particularly keen on looking that hard at arguably the most famous athlete at the Olympics. It's a lot easier to crack down on the Russians or East African distance runners than the guy who is drawing the most eyeballs to track and field at its premiere Olympic event.

He’s serving a two year ban for missing tests.

I think the Fraser-Pryce/Richardson battle will be even closer than it initially looks. On paper, Fraser-Pryce's 10.63 seems significantly better than Richardson's best mark of 10.72, but when adjusted for wind and altitude, they're about dead even. Fraser-Pryce benefited from a 1.3 m/s tailwind when she ran her 10.63. But Richardson had a 10.77 this year that was hindered by a 1.2 m/s headwind. After the adjustments, Richardson comes out slightly ahead with an adjusted time of 10.70 to Fraser-Pryce's adjusted time of 10.71. So Team USA may have a chance to win this gold medal after all. Also, in light of the earlier discussion of Jamaica's laughable drug testing protocols, I was amused to find a video about the two performances that was just inundated with pro-Jamaica partisans claiming that they never cheat and that their drug testing protocols are in fact quite rigorous.

Wow, Hassan's 10K world record lasted all of two days, as 5K world record holder Letesenbet Gidey broke it by five seconds. At this point, a sub-29-minute 10K seems like a certainty in the near future. I'm really going to have to do some research on these "super shoes."

Fahnbulleh has to have the worst form of any sprinter I've seen. Damn fast though.
