Prices have been raised. A lot. A whole lot. Would have cost me more than my airfare and hotel combined. Unfortunately, I'm out. For which tournament, sonofdogman? The only general admission fees are in Atlanta, and even if you go to all 5 sessions (3 day and 2 evening), that would be $71. Are we missing something?

We were looking at Chicago. My schedule with high school teams won't let me get away for Atlanta or Manhattan.

We have never actually sprung for a box - have only shared with others a few times back when they were much more affordable. If you've never been to Chicago, its kinda fun to walk back and forth on Quali Thursday, and on the first day of the main draw Friday, between Oak Street Beach and North Avenue Beach (where there will be many more courts set up). We are at three guys going so will likely get 2 rooms at the Millennium Knickerbocker, which is a short walk away. If you want to share a room with one of us, let me know and we'll see if we can set it up!

any word on if they are capping qualifiers like they have in years past in Chicago....ATL? Yes. They are. Am I correct assuming MBO is uncapped like previous years? Any idea what the number they’re capping Atlanta and Chicago?

With all the Collegiate facilities getting built feels like the opportunity to charge admission is there (ie. LSU, University of South Carolina .. possibly one of the Arizona Schools). Striking that balance between trying to save cost through not having to build courts and not being able to charge admission on public beaches is tricky.

i think there has always been a cap at each tournament but it’s usually around 128 per gender for the so cal tournaments

Okay. I was 1/2 right. All 3 tournaments have a 2 day Q (Wed/Thur) and each is capped at 77 teams. 77? What an odd number for a single elimination event. That's more science at work, I suppose. I have a theory about this... 😁

Okay. I was 1/2 right. All 3 tournaments have a 2 day Q (Wed/Thur) and each is capped at 77 teams. So I think the idea of less qualification matches the day before the main draw is a great one. 32 team single elim bracket for qualification means 3 matches to get in. That seems fair. I also like that they’re doing a pre-quali for the last 8 spots. However I think this pre-quali needs to occur the weekend before. At this point the avp is asking guys who have other job commitments to miss another day of work. Most of the guys doing volley fulltime would be straight into that top 24 quali grouping so this wouldn’t affect them. Also, what’s up with major avp next events scheduling tournaments during the week? Pottstown women’s open began Friday, seaside begins Friday, Waupaca begins Thursday. When you look at these events and people trying to make that jump upwards, between the avpnext events and qualis that’s a ton of days off of work.

Additionally, (maybe southbay11 can confirm this), but for the Atlanta event, the organization Rally VB that’s hosting put together a mini series of tournaments where the top 4 players will earn bids straight into the 2nd day of the quali, so top 22 not 24 players earn bids by avp points. This info is only available on the Rally VB website, not posted anywhere by avp. Also, a lot of these tourneys are retroactively posted on avp america as they occur, so the only way to get into these events is/was to know this series was happening via this random organization’s website. Frankly this seems absolutely heinous to me, and I can’t believe the AVP is allowing this to occur. rallyvb.com/avp-beach-tournaments-adult/

stephenasinjin I've said before that "pro" beach volleyball, especially here in the U.S., is a semi-pro industry at the best. The opportunity to earn a living doing it vanishes after the top 8-10 players per gender. Professional, semi-professional, or unprofessional. Those are the choices we have. It's a bleak and pessimistic view I have, I know. Always makes me chuckle when I see someone's social media include the label "pro beach volley." Delusional. Most of these individuals have other jobs/income to pay their bills. Makes me chuckle yes, but makes me sad too.
