Djokovic loses in the semis. Will play for bronze.
Still has one more chance in the mixed doubles.

tamz would his win in doubles count as a golden slam if he wins USA Open? Sadly no, and even more sad he won't be playing for Gold in the mixed doubles either....not a great day for Djokovic...still think the guy wins the US Open, but today was a brutal one for him...

Disappointing for Djokovic fans to be sure, but if he could only win the US Open or Olympic gold, almost everyone would choose the US Open, as he would compete the first men's calendar grand slam since Rod Laver in 1969. He's already the only man since Laver to win the first three majors in one season.

It's also a reminder of how incredible Steffi Graf was in 1988. The pressure to win the calendar slam, let alone a golden slam, has to be incredible. Both Serena and Martina (two of the three best women's players of all time, along with Steffi) had a look at it and both came up short in the semi of their fourth major. And in both cases (2015 US Open for Serena, 1984 Australian Open for Martina), they were massive favorites going into the semi.

The Djokovic match was so strange, as he was up a set and a break... but I guess Serena was too in the USO '15 that she lost. I think the heat got to Novak.

But I do think with the Olympics that year being held after the US Open, it kind of helped relieved a little pressure that she already had a grand slam and golden grand slam was just icing on the cake. Not to taking anything away of course, it's a feat only she has accomplished.

I definitely think the real pressure cooker for Steffi in 1988 was more at the US Open than at the Olympics.

Djokovic loses in the semis. Will play for bronze. Still has one more chance in the mixed doubles. Djoker loses Bronze and pulls out of mixed doubles....say shoulder injury, but could this be similar to Biles?

Wow, the Djokovic haters (read: salty Federer and Nadal fans) are out in force on Twitter, lol. At any rate, Djokovic is widely regarded as one of the mentally toughest athletes ever, up there with Michael Jordan. But I suppose anything is possible. He just needs to focus on the US Open. If he wins that (or really, even if he doesn't), nobody is really going to remember the Olympics, which is at best a distant fifth in terms of important tournaments.

Obviously the Slams are way more important than the Olympics, but I think it's crappy of Djokovic to pull out of mixed doubles. Nina Stojanovic's highest singles ranking is #82. Maybe she could win a doubles slam at some point, but Olympic bronze could've been the highlight of her career. At least start the bronze medal match instead of just handing your opponents a walkover. If it's so bad for Djokovic that he's really harming his chances at the US Open, then fine, withdraw.

I was actually pulling for him to complete to golden slam, and still definitely the Grand Slam...what he is doing is incredible to witness, and tennis fans should embrace it...my statement is a simple one...he pulls out of a medal match for a left shoulder injury - which didn't seem to play a factor in yesterday or today's losses from what we could see...will he receive the same criticism (unjustly I might add) the Biles has received for "quitting" on her team? I'm hoping Djokovic recovers from this...not expecting him to play anything leading up to the US open at this point, so he will have a month to get physically and mentally repaired...
