The women's group play is complete, and the quarterfinals will be early morning on Friday:
Canada/Brazil Great Britain/Australia Sweden/Japan Netherlands/USA
It will be interesting to see what happens. USA was the pre-tournament favorite, but they haven't played the best in pool play. The Netherlands has had a ridiculously dominant offense (21 goals--no one else has more than nine, though they were in the weakest group), but they've also conceded a fair number of goals. Sweden was probably the best team overall. It should be fun, as I think all eight teams actually have a chance to win gold.

Canada and Brazil have begun their quarterfinal. Great Britain and Australia start in 45 minutes, and then Sweden and Japan start an hour after that.

Canada over Brazil in a shoot out (after extra time). Goalie Labbe stopped two penalties to put Canada ahead.

Australia has sent the UK out 4-3 in extra time. Ellen White had a hat trick, but it still wasn't enough. Sam Kerr had two goals for Australia. Meanwhile, Sweden has just defeated Japan 3-1. So along with Canada advancing via penalties, three of the four semifinalists are set.

GB was primed to win but sloppy defense gave up an equalizer in the 89th. On to extra time, GB misses a penalty to go ahead, and then gives up a goal to Australia moments after. I guess the Team England heartbreak has moved to their women's team.

Nothing like the thrill of penalty kicks to get the day started.

I guess the Team England heartbreak has moved to their women's team. Well, they've never won a major tournament, so I'd say that heartbreak has been there all along. Though I guess it's only been in the last several years or so that they actually had the kind of talent (White, Bronze, etc.) to really challenge for those titles. It was a great match between Great Britain and Australia. Great Britain's defending was pretty suspect, especially on the first Kerr goal, in which they gave the super league's leading scorer way too much time and space. Also, that go-ahead goal for Australia took a big deflection off the British defender and went straight into the top right corner of the net.

So the semifinals are now set with the US facing Canada at 4 AM ET on Monday followed by Sweden and Australia at 7 AM. I think I would favor the US and Sweden to advance and play a rematch of their opening match in the final, though Canada and Australia are both capable of winning as well.
