It would be appropriate for an Olympics in Tokyo to have a fast track, as a fast surface at the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo greatly contributed to both Carl Lewis breaking the world record in the 100 and of course Mike Powell's legendary 8.95m long jump world record that still stands.

USA disqualified from the mixed relay for an exchange outside the zone. Sigh, why do we have so many problems with that.
Schweizer and Cranny got through to the 5K finals, but Sifan looked nonchalantly unbeatable. Niyonsaba got DQ'd, and I'm sure that will be a news item.
Men's 10K final coming up.

Impressive by Fisher to get 5th in that field. But that just makes him more sus after his defense of Houlihan (who he shares coaches with).
If it's as hot and humid as the announcers said it was, crazy they did that race in under 28.

First big notes, American pole vaulter Sam Kendricks, who was almost a shoe-in for a medal and had a shot at gold, tests positive for COVID and is out for the Games. That really sucks Sad news for Sam who is a great vaulter.

I still can't get over how Team USA can't get the damn stick around the circle in the relays.

For some reason, cameramen focusing on the hot Polish girl in last place who isn't a contender in the first 800 heat... Come on, do better. it was for a whole 3 seconds in a 2 minute race and she just missed qualifying by 2' finishing 4th of 8 in that heat

Just watched the replay of the mixed 4x400. The US appealed saying that their second leg was told to start in the wrong spot. But if you look at the end of the 1st leg, the USA's 2nd runner is nowhere near everyone else. That alone should make a runner say, "Wait, what am I doing?"
My guess is that the US was trying to have the man on the leadoff leg run as far as possible before handing off, but they lost track of where they were. Just inexcusably poor coaching and preparation. As an athlete you have to know where you need to be. This is running, it's not like you have to memorize every word of the NFL rulebook. Just start in the right spot and grab the baton.

USATF says their appeal was successful and the mixed 4x4 team was reinstated.

Just start in the right spot and grab the baton. Apparently, the Dominican Republic, who finished second in the heat, was also disqualified and then reinstated. So that makes me think it really was a race official's mistake that caused the problem, though the US of course has a well-earned reputation for screwing up relays.

It looks like there are three more finals tomorrow morning, starting with the men's discus at 7:15 AM ET. The mixed 4x400 relay final is scheduled to take place at 8:35 AM ET, and it will be followed by the women's 100m final, which should be one of the best events of the Olympics.

I’m sure we’ll find a way to get DQ’ed again.

We usually screw up the 4x100 relay. It's nearly impossible to get dq in the 4x4 yet we almost did.

This reminds me of perhaps my favorite story from high school track. One year at state, we had our 4x100 relay team in the final, and the leadoff runner actually forgot the baton at the beginning of the race. When he got to the first exchange and realized his mistake, he just slapped the next runner's hand, and then the subsequent runners did that at each "exchange." The team was of course DQ'd while everyone else laughed. One of our rival schools sent a baton to our coach as a "gift" the next Christmas, seeing as our school apparently couldn't afford one. It was pretty humiliating for everyone involved.
