I’m replying to this more so to get the thread back on the original subject matter. Barnett is essentially paid for his schtick. That’s how he keeps working. Salima, while not my favourite, is improving imo. Lastly, and not that you want or need my advice, I don’t think it reflects well on you to be publicly critical of your peers. That sort of thing has a way of coming back around. And I only say this because I like your work. I appreciate that! You're right, it's easy to get infected by the general negativity around the Volleytalk boards. I'll be better about that. Most of my criticism about volleyball broadcasters in general comes from lack of broadcasting skill, not lack of volleyball knowledge. That's why I really like Sunderland and Barnett in general, because in addition to the requisite volleyball knowledge they have the skill to take what they see and turn into words at a professional level. That's the really hard part about commentating volleyball in my opinion, because regardless of how much you know about the game, the game is so fast that verbalizing your thoughts clearly and concisely takes a lot more skill than just knowing the game. Agree with this last comment completely. 👏 The endless “uh’s” or “nice job’s” from ex players, coaches or others who know volleyball well but can’t express their knowledge concisely hurts the overall broadcast. Of course, play by play is 10x harder than analysis and Sundy is much better at that aspect than most with his wording. Barney as an analyst sometimes simply tries too hard to be clever or funny. His analysis of and enthusiasm for the sport is great - just add a slight adjustment on the other stuff. Broadcasting volleyball is hard work. If you have never done it, you simply don’t know how hard it is to do. 💛⭐️🏐🎤’s

He just needs to stop trying so hard.

THis right here is a must read. Kevin was ruthless when he was talking about Poulter he was so aggressive. Imagine her parents watching that game hearing this man comment rudly about their daughter. Its embarrassing

Its embarrassing So now we have both extremes for Poulter. Barney and then this article. Neither is accurate imo. My favourite, “Hancock was supposed to be the starter.”

Its embarrassing That’s some serious homerism. Plus, I note the author - presumably an Illini fan - was unable to correctly spell “Bartsch” like four times. How about putting some respect on her name?

Undeservedly so I think.

Undeservedly so I think. Like I said, its his schtick. I tend to ignore him. I don't need his/their commentary to shape my feelings on a match. I can jump to the wrong conclusions all on my own He may have been harsh but I also thought Poulter was much better at the end of the tournament vs the beginning.

Yes she is, I also think the whole tean was playing at a totally different level when thaty were playing in bracket play, not just Poulter. It is one thing to point out deficiencies of a player but it is another to take it to the level that he had. Critique can be constructive but nothing constructive can be garnered by saying she needs to be replaced, it is a disservice to the team, the coach, and the player.

I’ll just say again, he’s paid to have an opinion. I’m not saying it’s right.

To the volleyball experts, I have questions. Was Poulter the only player that Barnett suggested be replaced by her backup at the Tokyo Olympics? If there were instances of this happening to other USA players, please give specific examples. For those that have listened to Barnett call games prior to these Olympics, has he ever called for a player to be replaced by his or her backup during the match? Just trying to understand if this is something he does with some frequency, or if this was a one-time thing. Also, is this something other volleyball announcers do as well?

And, to fan the fire, had a wonderful interview with Paul and Kevin yesterday. Will post it later this afternoon at VolleyballMag.com. Really good stuff, even for you Barnie haters!
