True, although Maria Taylor did volleyball until she started moving up in the ranks. Camryn Irwin could’ve been good for beach. I think this is a big part of the 'why'. The number of women in broadcasting is fewer than what networks would prefer, so when they ARE there, they get promoted beyond volleyball pretty quickly. Maria Taylor is the most obvious example, but Katie George also does football in the fall instead of volleyball. As she should, because that's how she's going to advance the fastest in her career. Cam Irwin will hopefully be in that mix soon. Although I haven't heard much of her. She does AVP stuff now on Amazon? Yup. AVP stuff. Forgot about George, good example.

Maria Taylor is bad though, misspeaks a lot and a dry personality and you can feel the awkwardness when she interviews people. and George is the opposite she won’t shut up, so annoying. Well she went straight from the NBA Finals to the Olympics. So there must be something working for her.

I'm screaming I'm a little disappointed that the clip wasn't longer--I wanted to hear Sunderland finish his explanation.

How on earth did I not notice this during the game I'm dead.

It would be hilarious if that exchange prompted NBC to move Barnett off the broadcast. Sunderland comes on, and he's like, "Kevin Barnett has returned to the United States to attend to a personal matter. We'd like to welcome Amy Gant to the broadcast in his place..."

I wasn’t a fan of her early stuff, but Amy Gant dropped some decent pop songs later in her career.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I think Barnett is one of the better NBC broadcasters (although one might say that's a low bar - I'm pretty sure NBC contracts state that the job is for life). Sure, he's smug and not as funny as he thinks he is, but at least he's passionate about volleyball (especially indoor) and stays informed. After reading this thread, I did laugh when JT went down and Barnett immediately went to "when I hurt my ankle...." I'd still trade both Marlowe and Wong for him - he could do play-by-play for the beach with Dain as the analyst.
I also agree with guest2 that NBC needs to bring in at least one woman for the women's matches. Holly McPeak is a solid analyst, and so is Nicole Branagh. Cam Irwin could have done play-by-play with Dain - who is more in touch with the women's game from coaching college and calling the AVP than Wong is by far, and who is being massively under-used - providing analysis.

First, I miss the TNL on a weekly basis, especially during international competition season… nothing else had a mix of the disciplines as well as interviews and general volley talk.
I like Barnett as a commentator. I missed him for VNL this year…and I do wonder if this has hurt his commentary this year, as he doesn’t have as much inside info…

Misty was really good in her cameo appearances last summer on the Amazon Prime AVP shows. Would love to see her get into broadcasting.
I believe Dain has some limitations due to his USC obligations, might even be contractual on his much he can do.

Going to also throw my support for Barnett into the hat, he keeps things interesting and insightful.
Blanton on the other hand, is incredibly boring to listen to, and sounds like he’s only trying to cater to the newbies usually. Also often repeats the same thing over and over again from match to match.

To me, Rowdy Gaines is a good mix of expertise and excitement. The guy totally gets into the close, important races.
