I wasn’t a fan of her early stuff, but Amy Gant dropped some decent pop songs later in her career. This made me literally laugh out loud.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I think Barnett is one of the better NBC broadcasters (although one might say that's a low bar - I'm pretty sure NBC contracts state that the job is for life). Sure, he's smug and not as funny as he thinks he is, but at least he's passionate about volleyball (especially indoor) and stays informed. After reading this thread, I did laugh when JT went down and Barnett immediately went to "when I hurt my ankle...." I'd still trade both Marlowe and Wong for him - he could do play-by-play for the beach with Dain as the analyst. I also agree with guest2 that NBC needs to bring in at least one woman for the women's matches. Holly McPeak is a solid analyst, and so is Nicole Branagh. Cam Irwin could have done play-by-play with Dain - who is more in touch with the women's game from coaching college and calling the AVP than Wong is by far, and who is being massively under-used - providing analysis. Why not bring in p-1440 Kerri Walsh Jennings as a commentator?

Sure Barnett makes it about himself too much and isn't as funny as he thinks he is, but I still think he and Sunderland are the gold standard for the men's game, at least until the FIVB or NBC calls me to start doing some games. I wish they'd stay a bit more in tune with the international game in between Olympics, but the technical aspects of broadcasting for those two combined with actually knowing what's going on on the court are a pretty rare combination in volleyball commentary, unfortunately. The top-to-bottom global talent pool for English-speaking volleyball commentary is hilariously shallow - I won't complain about Barnett knowing how many worse options there are out there.
That said, if NBC wants to replace one or both of them for any reason, they should really call me

He definitely does make it about himself, a lot of references are sometimes lost because only him or high level pro volleyball players would know about it. But at least it's not as "dumbed down" as other events and their commentators that they have continually repeat certain things for the average viewers.

Yeah he's insufferable but I do prefer him over the other British guy who can't even tell that there was a block touch called and would say that there was a net touch. Sundi could have soloed and carried this coverage by himself.

Going to also throw my support for Barnett into the hat, he keeps things interesting and insightful. Blanton on the other hand, is incredibly boring to listen to, and sounds like he’s only trying to cater to the newbies usually. Also often repeats the same thing over and over again from match to match. Dain is dull as dishwater, it’s true. Not just that his voice is annoying as well.

Kevin Barnett Is ...
One of my favorites. He is energetic and engaged. He is colorful and opinionated. He is knowledgeable about the sport and the current teams and players. Sure, he sometimes tries to pull off a joke that falls flat on its face. Whatever. I like him and Sundy together. Sometimes they get into arguments. Cool by me. This is part of what makes things interesting. And, it adds perspective. I love it when he pushes Sunderland's buttons a bit and gets him talking about volleyball in the '70s and '80s. He should point out more often that Sundy (and Marlowe too!) won gold in '84; they could tell all kinds of stories I'd like to hear. And, yeah, Barnett talks about his personal experiences as an athlete when trying to portray the experiences of the current players. But, he's a two-time Olympian and has earned the right IMO. *I've* never played at that level and I enjoy hearing what goes on from someone who knows. I've also enjoyed his commentary in NCAA matches. And, I thought he was great partnered with Salima Rockwell for the Athletes Unlimited matches.
I get that the majority of the *vocal* people here seem to dislike him. But, I don't see it. I have a long list of things that I think NBC is doing badly in televising these Olympic volleyball tournaments. But, choosing Barnett and Sunderland to work together isn't one of them. That's my 2 cents.

One way to think of Barney's work so far is that he is a work in progress, maybe struggling to find an identity and trying things, making mistakes while working on it.
Get a growth mindset people.

I've always enjoyed Barnett's work for the most part. I was kind of surprised when there were so many complaints on here....and that was almost a decade ago. I guess he's an acquired taste.

You guys are all fukcing losers. Barnett actually has personality and is fun to listen to. So many people whine and complain about how announcers talk down to the viewer: “oh volleyball is best 3 of 5 sets to 25, win by two; and remember the 5th set is only to 15.” Every loser on this website is always complaining about how the sport doesn’t get enough media coverage, but you bitch and moan about having two Olympic volleyball players with actual opinions and real banter. Give me a break. 31shoot No swearing! Enjoy your timeout.

He'd slap that jabroni across the face, then hit the rock bottom THEN give him the peoples elbow!

Kevin Barnett is
secretly Jarom Jordan (BYU announcer). It's probably just me, but I think they sound exactly alike.
