You would want that, wouldn't you? More than that, I'd want you to go away. You know thats not gonna happen, so just deal with it, darling.

USA has moved out to a -150 favorite. Some large bets from respected groups must have come in on USA. I don't think there would be enough USA recreational money coming in to move the line. IDK, Go USA!

This will be all on him. It always falls back on the coaches. I know some of ya'll support him and that is fine, but many of us have our doubts and we will see who was correct after today.Though, to be fair, I think that if both teams play to their ceilings, Serbia will win. We just do not have a hitter of Bośković's caliber yet. Thompson should get there, but in time. I'll assume that there are lots of VT posters (not necessarily ToddyJ...) who read this and nodded, then watched the USA-Serbia match, then thought, No, nevermind about seeing who's correct -- Karch is still one of the 3 worst coaches in volleyball history.
I haven't been keeping up with a lot of threads -- too busy actually watching matches (and crazy-busy at work). But I've read a bit, and it seems a few people thought my post at the end of the USA-China thread was saying that criticism is not allowed. Not at all. Feel free to criticize what's actually happening now.
I'm just sick of people who decided that Karch is terrible because of Destinee Hooker 9 years ago, and so no matter what else happens, he must still be completely terrible in everything he does, all these years later. Or, after watching practice day after day for years, Karch picked [insert Setter's Name], but she didn't go to the college I went to, so he must be a complete idiot. Or he didn't select [Carlini/Plummer/Wilhite/whoever] who DID go to the college I went to, so again he must be completely terrible. Maybe no one on VT has played at his level, and there are only a few dozen who have coached volleyball at his level, and very few VTers (none?) have been in the USA gym every day for years -- but with much less information than he has, we still know that he must be an idiot. That's what I'm ranting against.
I watched USA-ARG, and the start of USA-CHI, and USA-TUR, and USA-ROC, and if Poulter pretty much never got pulled in THOSE matches, then Karch clearly has NO confidence in his other setter. And apparently he picked her for her serve (the same serve he talked her OUT of doing like 3 years ago), but we've repeatedly seen that her serve rarely gets going until the 2nd or 3rd time through -- she hasn't seemed at all effective standing around for 30 minutes before serving once, so her serve doesn't seem to help in the role of a serving sub, or as a dub-sub setter. So again, why did he pick her? And he has a 6'4" OH with tons of honors and awards, who he refuses to play in any role other than a serving sub. So again, why pick her over other strong candidates?
So yeah, he's done some highly questionable things. Kinda like every other imperfect human being I've ever met. And I'm probably with the 98% of VTers who wish we had Lang Ping or Guidetti coaching us instead (although that didn't work out great for either of them...).
But he also helped his team win (not on tiebreaks, but outright) the Pool of Death despite injuries to his best player and also his starting setter, with 8 first-time Olympians, then win 6 straight sets in the knockout round to eliminate the defending World Champs/Silver medalists, to add a second Olympic medal to a Worlds Gold medal (and a 5th -- how many of the people who ripped a 5th-place finish 3 years ago have ever finished 5th in the world in anything?). And for the people who watched all of that, and still can't find ANYthing positive to say...
Go USA!

So are you supporting me or chastising me? Or both, lol. There was a lot to unpack there. Give me a smidgen.

So are you supporting me or chastising me? Or both, lol. There was a lot to unpack there. Give me a smidgen. I'm just talking, man -- and not sure if anyone else is even listening You're good in my book; thoughtful and passionate. And, unfortunately, I guess I tend to think complex thoughts, not well-suited for this medium.
You said you'd watch the USA-Serbia match, see what happens, and see if your doubts (??) in this team and its leadership were correct or not. I think that's awesome -- we human beings have these great brains, so we can continue to collect information and continuously re-evaluate what we think is true. I think lots of other people planned to watch the match, and then completely ignore anything positive that happened, and keep posting exactly what they decided upon like 6 years ago. And that seems sad -- the mind is a terrible thing to waste.
Going into the Olympics, the Chinese women looked unbeatable (and thumped the US at the VNL), After one day, the USA men looked great and France looked terrible. Things change. It's complicated.
On the one hand, VT is all about people going full-on Chicken Little, totally over-reacting to 3 or 4 points of one match of one tournament in one year of a quad/quint (which seems kinda foolish to me, but these 60-page match threads don't just write themselves!).
And on the other hand are the people who just decided that So-and-So is awesome, or terrible, and anyone who disagrees is an idiot. No matter what actually happens in the world, even over several years, they're not going to reconsider -- they're just going to post the same thing, over and over and over again ("um, we heard you the first 100 times"), call anyone who disagrees "stupid," and never turn on their brains and realize that they might not know everything. Or that things change.
And, as a coach myself, I wouldn't be a fan of anonymous people on a message board who have never been in my gym repeatedly ranting about how I should be fired, because they disagree with 3 of the 100,000 decisions I've made. So I guess I tend to be one to defend coaches in general. And I feel that someone who's done so much for USA (small-V) volleyball as Karch has earned a little more respect than many here give him. Shame on me for hoping for people to be respectful on an anonymous message board!
And I guess I was just in a salty mood
