For the A-team to come back and get the Bronze, and for them to win both AVP's they entered AFTER the inevitable post-Olympic let-down, is really quite an amazing feat. Not sure how anyone could argue that, even when they are on, Pavan/Humana-Paredes are a better team. Kudos to Borger/Sude, and specifically to Sude, for outblocking the 6'5" Pavan 6 to 1. A lot easier to win those AVPs when your #1 rival is missing. Green card issues or whatever the reason. Great finish for Germany but let’s not kid ourselves here, they’re a fairly weak winner who happened to catch the US and Canada on bad days and only broke pool by a three point tiebreaker. After a disappointing quad, wouldn’t be surprised to see them split up next year.

Conclusion: Canada in the semifinals and Canada in the finals looked like two different teams. They were, but the semis seemed to be more about the Ateam's sloppiness and poor play than anything else. Mel and Sarah played well, but Alix looked like it was her first outdoor event and April was very poor. There was a stretch where they passed 3-4 standing floats back over the net for free balls within a few points. I hope MHPavs don't split up, no one else can give the Ateam a game when Alix and April play well (maybe AP and Duda if that happens) but they really need some sort of mental adjustment. When I got up, I assumed they had lost and was completely unsurprised when I checked the scores and saw it had happened, and in 2. After all, they played a mid-level team and a ton was on the line. The only logical conclusion was they would choke. They have always been very inconsistent, but it used to be more event to event, rather than match to match

Interesting that the post-Olympic letdown only applies to the Ateam since every women's team in this event except Italy (0-4) played in the Olympics. (And on the men's side Mol/Sorum seemed to deal with that letdown pretty well).

Damn....150k to the winners for this event?? That's pretty good. Probably only A-Team got a bigger payout from a single result (not in prize money, though).

My point was that as the Gold Medal winners, with all of the necessary public appearances and other obligations which would come with that pressure, it would be more daunting than it would be for those who simply participated in the Olympics. Mol/Sorum handled it well, and so did April and Alix, but I'm guessing that it still must be kinda rough, and perhaps easier for younger players to stay up than it would be for a 39 year old April.

As a tennis fan, I always believe tournament results in the Fall are not cannon. It's a bonus for whomever wins these tournaments, but it doesn't say much about the big picture. It's a Spring/Summer sport and everything that happens afterwards is an afterthought. I see Beach Volleyball through the same lens.

For the top volleyball teams peaking in the second half of the season was most rewarding. In tennis you have the first grand slam in January/February already.

Conclusion: Canada in the semifinals and Canada in the finals looked like two different teams. Per Instagram we now know that MHP dislocated her shoulder in that semifinal match and only was able to continue on adrenaline. She is still healing from that injury and was finally able to do push-ups again.

I hope her playing in the finals didn’t cause more damage and possibly leading to her delayed recovery.
