Who else would you put at 3? Ohio State beat Washington but no one else of note. Louisville beat Purdue but went 3-2 with Arizona State. Even though the Cal Poly match was 3-0, the scores were -23, -21, -24 and Cal Poly is struggling to start the season. Washington lost to Ohio State and dropped a set each to Cal Poly, Iowa, Illinois, and Pepperdine. I would have put them there, but they are well clear of Louisville by like 150 points, and washington by 200. I get their record supports the rank, but having watched Pitt, I'm not sure they are actually that clear of those teams immediately behind them. For some voters (myself included), there's not much difference between 3 and 15ish. I think the big difference in the poll numbers between Pitt and Louisville/Washington is that Pitt's record is superior so it's easy to put them at three. After that, things get more blurry and different voters will probably rank the teams in different orders.

I get the total points concept, but can anyone cite other examples of a situation where the team that got the most first place votes ended up not being first?

Rationale 1. There are very few significant differences in the poll. 2. There are plenty of the same "idiotic" votes in the VT poll that people like making fun of when the AVCA poll is issued. 3. The statement pisses you off. Pisses me off? LOL. It's expected from you, honestly. Trust me. Anyway, how significant differences should there be for it to be a better poll? That kind of logic confuses me. i.e If 5 teams aren't differentiated by 5 or more spots, is that the difference maker for you? actually - to #2, we can ask vballfan17 what he thinks about that, since he goes through literally every AVCA poll and sees ours. Even in football - I'm pretty sure Arizona was a 'mistake' vote in the poll as they haven't won a game in... god knows how many matches. I doubt someone confuses Arizona and Arizona State in the VT poll, while this has happened in the AVCA, like San Diego/UC San Diego, etc. But if anyone knows, he would! I would say since I've been doing it this season, I haven't seen any "idiotic" votes, like ranking a winless team. I have seen some surprises, but nothing like what I've witnessed in some of the AVCA polls. Ranking Utah State instead of Utah, UCSD instead of San Diego and Georgia State instead of Georgia Tech are a few examples that come to mind.

That's not a bad rule of thumb for significantly different. The logic is that if there is not much in the way of significant differences, you are essentially looking at the same polls. Also significantly different doesn't tell you which poll is better. It is just means they are different with "better" being a subjective opinion.

Happens a lot when there's not a clear cut #1 actually. Charles Barkley somewhat infamously lost an NBA MVP despite having more than 40% of first place votes and 11 (there were only 92 total votes) more than anyone else.

I ended up making some pretty big changes in my ballot this week. The difference between 3 and the next 15+ is so small. Seems like there has been more H2H T25 matches then ever before - with each match creating an inconsistent outcome. Because of this - I have concluded; 1) I am now almost entirely concerned with w/l vs. strength of competition and nothing to do with games scores. 2) There is a lot of parity - so there will continue to be a lot more volatility in the polls this year.
Here was my ballot - I have given my love to Louisville and Utah this week. I have resisted their lofty Pablo rating all year, until now.
1. Wisconsin 2. Texas 3. Pittsburgh 4. Louisville 5. Utah 6. Nebraska 7. Ohio State 8. Washington 9. Purdue 10. Kentucky 11. Oregon 12. Baylor 13. Florida 14. BYU 15. Minnesota 16. Stanford 17. Creighton 18. San Diego 19. UCLA 20. Penn State 21. Tennessee 22. Georgia Tech 23. Marquette 24. Western Kentucky 25. Colorado

I just want to say that I had Nebraska ranked 15th. You are always the toughest on Nebraska, and rainbowbadger is always the toughest on Wisconsin.

Kind of humorous how Creighton ends up at #17 in both polls, dropping 7 in VT to get there but rising 2 in AVCA.

I just want to say that I had Nebraska ranked 15th. Not crazy. I also had Nebraska at #15 this week. Last week they were 19.

ugh I hate the avca poll. UCLA smacked around Georgia Tech with ease other than one set just a week ago but find themselves below them again
