Well, this poll will need to be rebuilt after a night when ... It will be very interesting to see the gyrations and contortions some people will go to to justify not allowing two ACC teams to be ranked above every PAC and B1G team in the next poll. This situation has been unfolding all season long, but up to now they've always had someone to pass the hot potato to for upholding the pride of the conference. No longer. They've run out. Well, I guess the B1G fans could try to pass it on to the Terps, an awkward state of affairs given the years they cascaded contempt on them and Rutgers for "diluting" their conference. I'm enjoying this.

Do you have some doubt about this? I don't think even the AVCA is going to rank someone else besides those three in the top 3 spots. I mean, individuals might, but overall I assume that's how both the AVCA and volleytalk poll is going to go. If we're arguing that's how it should go before the polls come out, I feel like we're saying the ocean should be called wet.

I was responding to someone who suggested that people would be trying to justify other teams ahead of that trio. Specifically, they were saying that some might have trouble voting Pittsburgh and Louisville ahead of every Big Ten and Pac-12 team. I don't think it will be hard.

To be clear, i am sure those three will hold the top three spots in AVCA and VolleyTalk's polls this week. I also think "some" voters will not list it that way. Washington's fall to Earth against WSU should make it difficult for PAC lovers to resist this idea, as the only remaining one loss PAC teams were not in the top 10 last week. On the other hand, I fully expect some B1G fans to make a vote with Purdue or Wisconsin still being better than Pitt and/or Louisville.

Is that important to you? Absolutely. It's hard to work yourself up into a lather complaining without something to complain about. I would agree that the group I target here is a minority one. Most people seem willing to base their opinions on a core of data, leaving only "some" to run amok with conference bias tainting their votes. But it is loads of fun to skewer those some when the opportunity arises. Because it is a great travesty of injustice when your pet conference is unfairly maligned, and they must be avenged! And so on and so on.

No one voted for WA to be higher than 5 in this poll (Week 3), even before the losses to Utah and WSU. I can't imagine that anyone is going to rank them higher this week (9/26) than they did in Week 3. I'm not sure why you think a "PAC lover" would vote for WA in the top 3 in the Week 5 poll

No one voted for WA to be higher than 5 in this poll (Week 3), even before the losses to Utah and WSU. I can't imagine that anyone is going to rank them higher this week (9/26) than they did in Week 3. I'm not sure why you think a "PAC lover" would vote for WA in the top 3 in the Week 5 poll I now wish I had phrased that differently. Instead of saying "PAC lovers" I should have said something like "west-coasters". Back when I came onto this board in 2005, the "ruling class" were west coast schools - that means the PAC, and other western teams like Hawaii. Back then, schools with a time zone of Mountain or more western tended to win everything. Their fan bases were proud to the point of arrogance, and as you might expect, naturally took it as a right of honor to slam east-coast teams. Over time, the west-coast chokehold on the sport loosened. Thankfully, the fanbase there moderated their numbers and toxicity level, although a few stalwarts from the past clung to the old days (BiK is one). My comment refers to that portion of the west-coast fanbase that disparages east-coast teams. As the second tier western schools declined, the PAC became the "champion" of many of this group. So, I was narrowly focused on PAC schools that could be voted higher than Pitt/Louisville to keep those "pretender ACC schools" down. That narrow focus caused me to miss the possibility that BYU could be stood up in place instead. Check out the voting ranges for the VolleyTalk poll. There are 30 voters, and Louisville and Texas are in the top 3 of all. But Pitt isn't. They are as low as #5 in at least one voter's tally. Additionally, Purdue, Wisconsin, and BYU are listed as being voted as high as #3. So at least three of the thirty voters have Pitt behind at least one school. I would speculate that the voters who had Purdue and Wisconsin #3 were B1G fans, and the voter who had BYU was a fan of western teams (mountain time zone or more western).
