Also, that was such a horrible double call on Iosia from the ref. Hate to see that call so early in the match as it sets a precedent going forward. Yeah that call was ridiculous. remind me when that happened?

I did not watch the match. So, when I saw some of the comments about Saige in this thread (during the actual match), my first thought was they were all complimentary; some perhaps a bit over-enthused. Then, I looked at Stats and saw that she had like 3 assists, 1 kill (in 2 attempts), and 1 block assist in 2 sets of (limited) play; that's a very small sample size to form a strong opinion one way or another as to her earning more playing time. But, hopefully, those who watched the match were looking at things that don't show up in the box score. This situation (Jhenna vs Saige/Naomi) reminds of why in football, the backup QB (sitting on the bench) is the most popular player among the disgruntled fans. There's not some kind of overwhelming surge of people thinking Saige is better than Jhenna. As far as I recall there has been one person, and they're not a Texas fan. Mostly it's people excited to see her get a chance. I didn't think she was overwhelming in a limited data set. I liked the kill on two and I liked the block, but it's not like her sets were "wow-ing" me as so much better than Gabriel. To me it was obvious very quickly when Gabriel took over from Shook that the team was much better off. In order for Saige to increase her playing time she's going to have to be showing something in practice. My guess is - and it's only a guess - she's already showing herself to be ahead of Cabello in practices. But then there's the dynamic that she's a grad transfer, so her window of opportunity is extremely limited. Maybe that's driving the decision to put her out there ahead of Cabello. It's all speculation as far as I'm concerned. What I do know is that we haven't seen anything from SKT at Texas to indicate she should be getting more reps. Her time on the court just hasn't been extensive enough. We'll have to see what happens going forward.

I think people are excited that she ‘looks’ the part. Very fluid and had a big block on one point. Jhenna is a gamer, but 5’6 will always be 5’6, so I think what’s why posters were so excited about Saige. It won’t have anything to do with anything tangible until we see Saige set and entire set

Jhenna’s play has picked up in the last 2 game. I can’t see JE replacing a setter he thinks is playing well. SKT looks good to me in a small sample size. But unless Jhenna has a Shook TCU kind of game I don’t see a complete replacement and just continued late subs to close out a set.

It won’t have anything to do with anything tangible until we see Saige set and entire set And even then you never know. I watched UCLA beat USC 3-1 last night. USC has been having issues with consistency all season thus far. So Coach Keller throws the freshman, Mia Tuaniga, in there. She seems to provide the Trojans with a spark, and they go on to win the set. She then starts the 4th set, and UCLA proceeds to put an unholy drubbing on them. Tuaniga ends up getting pulled at 21-10 in a match set that ended 25-14. Not that she was the answer to all their prayers in the 3rd set, or that the result was all her fault in the 4th. They have other issues, too, for sure. But it's also not like SKT is a freshman, either. She's been the starter at Utah, a prominent program that consistently makes the tournament, including last spring. You can watch her play whole matches on Youtube. Gabriel does so much for this team in terms of intangibles. She's also been the best setter option for going on her third season. I don't think any UT volleyball fan is going to want to just kick her to the curb. There's too much appreciation. But whatever holes are on this team, they're not at OPP, MB, or RS. They're not at the service line. Texas is absolutely elite at every one of those spots. So then you have DS, libero, and setter. And while Petersen, Iosia, and Gabriel all have their moments for sure, they're not the same when compared to the best at their position around college volleyball the way players like Eggleston, Butler, Fields, O'Neal, and Phillips are. That's just being honest, without intending to be hurtful. When O'Brien agreed to come out for the team we were all excited to see what she looked like. If there was an all conference DS transferring in we'd want to see how they compare to Petersen. Same thing with Saige. As opposed to if a ballyhooed middle blocker wanted to spend their graduate transfer year at Texas. It would be like, "Well, I guess. Don't know how they're going to see playing time, but I guess we'll find out."

I agree, but I also think she tried to make up for it the next point when one of the girls doubled and didn't call it. Who knows though. From what I understand they made it an emphasis to call double contact as well as being more strict on “throwing the ball.” I think we’ll continue to see some controversy during the season. I’m also curious to see how it will be approached during the tournament. Was watching with my daughter who used to be a setter and laser focuses on potential doubles. We both noticed that the ref called doubles on Texas and Rice when the player was not the setter. But when the setter set the same type of ball (spin), ref let it go. In fact, right after Iosia got called for a double, the very next point Jhenna set the same type of ball and....no whistle.

Watching him live at Gregory, he was heavily involved with input into the team. Much more than Tonya during the game (sideline giving pointers between serves) or timeouts.

I noticed that too, but didn’t want to say anything in case I was reading too deep into the calls. That’s the kind of stuff that makes me crazy, tbh. The non-setter calls are just lazy officiating.

I have no idea why, maybe it’s just the reps after summer break. I just know if Bri is hitting 200 going into the tournament…gulp

It’s one of the terrible, inexcusable things officials do. A lot of crap they get isn’t totally fair- it’s a tough gig- but this one is all in them. Last year, NCAA vb issued an “officiating focus” to ease up on calling doubles simply bc of spin, bc it’s a non-setter setting, or when player is making an extremely athletic/difficult play. Aka quite blowing your whistle just bc it spins and the other team groans, you’ve decided you were gonna blow it as soon as the middle got ready to set, or when you saw the setter on the run trying to make a difficult set. The new focus has helped. Still a ways to go..
