It was a good match for Hawaii. It's interesting to see how the Big West teams do against each other, now that teams are playing other teams that didn't play in 2020. Credit Riverside for doing a couple of good things. They served Hawaii short and forced Williams to take the first contact. I don't recall them doing it with Igiede but they may have. I thought that led to a few bad passes on Hawaii's side. Osuji has a nice arm and Bickers had a good match in leading her team in kills.
Hawaii, as noted above, seemed to struggle a little with the short passes with the middles taking them. But overall, it was a statically good match for Hawaii. It's hard to judge because it is against a team like Riverside, but it was good to see Wagoner and Akana get playing time, as well as see Williams back in the line up. Like others, not sure what to make of that as a whole, so we'll see what happens on Saturday.

This lineup is a ‘ball control” and “defense first”lineup IMHO. We lacked size with 5 of the 7 starters 6-0 or under but we dug and controlled the ball pretty well so this lineup did well agains UCR. Don;t know how this lineup will do against teams with dynamic players and more athleticism so I hope Robyn has another lineup ready to go to play with the big dogs in the conference. Um, not to be too much of a jerk, but the league is not looking all that strong this season. I am not sure Hawai'i has not already played the teams with the most firepower on their regular season schedule. Utah and San Diego have already shown what they can do in quality wins over Pac 12 teams, USC is extremely inconsistent but was up 13-10 on Creighton in the fifth before the Jays took the last five points, and Marquette has a lot of firepower (glad the Badgers served them really, really tough). Thus, defense and ball control may very well be the keys to a championship for the Wahine this season. Plus, I don't know if anyone else in the league has anyone Igiede level scary as someone to try to stop (and I would say the same for the majority of B1G teams). Good transition opportunity digs and good passes are huge in getting her opportunities.

From my casual POV
Location: Lang (and miles ahead of Byrd) Blocking: Byrd (If we sideout at a good percentage I don't see that big of a trade-off between the two) Digging: Lang (gets low and reads well) Serve: Wash
Final verdict: Lang needs to play full-time for the rest of the season. It's the big-west, we aren't going to see many elite or athletic outsides go over her anyways.
Some other nitpicks: -Williams needs to play like a senior or honestly the more smart choice would to develop Kiraly by starting her every match from now on. Also, all this talk about why Kiraly was playing over needs to stop. Williams had Choy setting her, she made anyone look good in 2019.

Sky Williams has a big tendency to disappear against decent to good teams. Robyn needs to watch for this and when this does occur Robyn need to insert Kiralyi. Hey, I finally spelled her name right.

The one good thing is, Robyn has Byrd to turn to if the LBSU and Cal Poly Outside Hitter start to go over Lang with any kind of regularity. The one downside when the Wahine face LBSU is that, Robyn may be without De Goede and Johnson. Hopefully, both of them will be cleared to play against LBSU.

Hoping for a quick recovery and rehab, so she will be ready to go by next Spring.

With LBSU, if Hawai'i is smart and wants to play tactful, they will go after Williams and serve her short floaters. One, to force her to move and pass more, and two, by serving her short, she has to pull up to receive and then pull back to get ready for her approach. The one thing with Williams though is once her passing breaks down, everything else follows. Leoniak was good on the right, RAM should put her back there.

The serve that you are talking about is something Leoniak does quite good. Thinking instead of using Gong to come in for Akana, to serve and play the back row, Robyn should use Leoniak, instead.

I would use Leoniak as a 6 rotation hitter. The more reps she gets in the front row to polish her hitting, the better. Obviously she can play defense and for someone her height, that's pretty amazing. Have her hit the weights and improve her strength and vertical and she could be Hawai'i's next AA by the time she leave's UH. Although I will say, I think Igiede will get the next honor for that. Hopefully!

Hopefully! I would not. Remember, Leoniak started her growth spurt in high school, just 3 years ago, and she just turned 18 last month. She is still getting use to her new height, and it shows, in her timing and approach. Not to mention, she still could be growing. Practice, practice, practice will take care of her timing and approach. Thinking she will be a 6 rotation hitter, and a very dominant one come next year. But her late growth spurt also explains why she is so good in the back row.

Having her practice to hone her craft won't do justice if she's not playing where she can see what she's up against and improve from there. Practice can only take you so far, and then you have to put it out there on the court in a real game. RAM needs to develop her and let her find her groove while out there.

Right now, Leoniak is not ready to play all 6 rotations. Best thing to do with her is, bring her along slowly. Play her against teams like the one the Wahine just beat. When the Wahine take the 1st 2 sets then let her play the 3rd set, start there. grow from there first. That would allow her to have playing time. Maybe by Tournament time she may be ready to start and really contribute.
