I'm watching the replay now and being reminded that, with the exception of the third set, where UCLA was very poor, this match showcased some pretty high level volleyball. That was especially true in the fourth set, where both teams were on their game and the outcome could have easily gone either way. Some hard hitting, great defensive plays, and long rallies.
Marin Grote played really big for UW, offensively and defensively, in this set. She is becoming an elite middle.
You could also see Lauren Bays just growing in confidence before your eyes. She is capable of truly spectacular plays and her quickness compensates a lot for UW's general slowness on floor defense. Imagine how good she will be when she learns to better anticipate the flow of the game.

I don't know why she didn't play but if she didn't travel, she won't be playing against WSU. From what I heard from the announcer, "they made the decision in the morning".... that doesn't sound like she didn't travel with the team. Before flying up, I would guess.

The key last night was turning around the passing. They came out of the break passing dimes, especially Bays. Why then was UW's hitting less efficient? UCLA amped up their defense, but I think UW was just swinging more freely, being much less tentative. Both Hoffman and Drechsel had some real bombs. Grote is becoming a real star. That takes a lot of pressure off the outsides, if UW can get a good pass.
McLaughlin, an ex-surfer, used to talk a lot about getting "the vibe" - after wiping out in the first two sets (serving and passing), they got up on the board and rode the wave.

I still don't know what Cook was challenging in the fifth set -- center line violation? UCLA player bodied into the net on her way down.

I still don't know what Cook was challenging in the fifth set -- center line violation? UCLA player bodied into the net on her way down. And possibly a center line violation when Martin's foot appeared to cross the line. Just finished watching the fourth and fifth sets on replay and conclude I was a little harsh with Powell. I think she set a good match. I still don't think she's been consistent enough this year and still think her serve could/should be more deadly. There are two players who are absolutely key for the Huskies and whom they cannot afford to have bad matches: Hoffman and Powell. Finally, I note that Mac May's last kill evened the score at 2-2 in the fifth set. UCLA needed to find some way, somehow, to get her the ball in crunch time.

Imagine how good she will be when she learns to better anticipate the flow of the game. Some of that is just the switch from DS to L. Any ball she can get to is her ball (unless the setter is going for it), instead of deferring to the Libero. She has the reflexes - she just needs to pull the trigger. While I like her spunkiness, Cook needs to tell her to stop kicking the ball in frustration, lest she should draw a flag.

When that play happened, I asked out loud (in my living room), "How TF did she manage to stay out of the net on that play?" And then the video answered me that she did not. However, I didn't see the net contact. I only inferred it from her position and her momentum.

Watching the film now. If Luper plays UCLA win. Sanders and Hoffman look the best I've seen them this fall. Sanders is one of the most underrated players in the Pac. Well if Endsley plays it's a different match too. She provides far more upside than 9 kills @ 0.088% in a 5 set match for a LS attacker.

While I like her spunkiness, Cook needs to tell her to stop kicking the ball in frustration, lest she should draw a flag. On the other hand, she seems to have practiced chasing down balls and extending with a kick to get them up. Last night was not her first of these, but she got a remarkable kick at the end of the surface that went straight up. Unfortunately, Crenshaw did not quite get it over the net. It looks as though we will be seeing more of those through her time here. (Yes, The frustration kicks are something different)
