I think it'll be a lot to ask a 35 year old who's been playing for as long as he has to be physical and terminal enough to hang with the top teams consistently. Even as an OH, he's not exactly lighting it up passing or attacking in Italy. Even if I'm wrong, depth is still an issue. I don't think Patch or Ensing are the right options, and we won't get Gabi to play until 2024.

I haven’t been following mens this year but looks like Russell is back and better than ever?! He has had many opportunities to try and prove himself this year and hasn't done so. This was a great match for him, and I am hoping it means it is a return to his last two years in Perugia and first year in Trentino form. I am just not holding my breath yet.

I agree, Russell needs a bit more time to get more comfortable and confident. I assume he will get plenty of chances in VNL/WCh. A trio of Russell, DeFalco, and Jaeschke is strong but beyond them there is a drop off. I hope we see Jaeschke get an extended look since he’s been strong on both fronts of receiving and attacking but gotta prove that in the USA gym.
Also, I wouldn't mind trying Russell on the right side.

If ever a time to finally give Russell a long leash and let him play free, for Lorenzo Bernardi now would be the time. For whoever advances Lube would be a nice draw imo.

Honestly, I believe Piacenza and even the whole squad thought Rossard+Holt is the better duo. Problem is Rossard has up and downs against disciplined teams and Holt can't be relied on all the time because of his injuries.
When Russell played, there were chemistry issues and many times the team didn't have the same fire when playing with him.
Russell didn't quite fit because he can't even be use as a serving substitute admittedly due to Antonov and Stern being a tier above servers than him. It's difficult to return when you have to play the whole game to make an impact. My feeling is Bernardi or the club leadership put too much pressure on his return as he's probably the team's highest paid player when they should've managed his "coming back from an injury situation" with a clear goal on mind.
Brizard also taking the captaincy so quickly when he's a newcomer of the team kind of put some weird vibes around the team and while it is normal... unnecessary pressure on him. It sometimes feels like he's listening to rock while the team is listening to disco. It's great that he's unpredictable but last year's setters weren't but still were so much better at setting at the right tempo.

Today is the Piacenza's club biggest match of the season, perhaps of its existence. The home team Trentino is heavy favorites on the betting side and has not lost to Piacenza at home in the past 21 times. Wow.
There are many factors at play: The energy level amd fatigue factor of Trentino. Not completely sure full attendance is allowed yet. The incredible dominance of the Trentino Serbian middles is a must for them to succeed. Will Bernardi allow Russell to play free? Which Piacenza opposite will show up. Personally I think Stern will end up playing more as his all around game and better feet will be needed. Piacenza needs to pound away at the service line. Trentino's weakness is their right side of the court and block. They are outstanding through the middle and left side.
The longer the match goes the needle to a Piacenza win will be pushed.
Game time 12:30 Eastern.

16-11 stunting Michielletto over on Russell.
Not sure if Recine is healthy.
16-12 Trentino
