How pathetic is New Mexico??? The only possible explanation for NMSU not getting an invite is that they are being blackballed by UNM. New Mexico is only one school, and they don't have much power of influence at the moment. If New Mexico State truly was a valuable addition, the other schools could simply outvote UNM. The reality is that the others also see no value in NMSU. They're in the same market as UTEP and don't add much. They add ..... meeting minimum conference membership requirements, without having to add ... [reads notes] a school that was DII in 2019 ....

Hate to break it to you, but the FCS school is seen as more attractive. I'm not really opposed to NMSU. I have a lot of friends who went to school there. But the reality is that no matter what New Mexico thinks, no one else wants them either, so they'll only be added as a last resort.

Lol, okay. Well if you say it, then it must be true. It doesn't matter who says it. Adding Tarleton over NMSU is pathetic and wrong.
But those TV sets in Stephenville though!!

I think it's the nearby ones in DFW that is the attraction. And a game every other year in the best football recruiting area in the country.

The more I read up on Tarleton State, the more I like them as a potential addition to the Mountain West. I thought this article was really insightful. Tarleton has surprisingly good attendance despite not being eligible for the FCS playoffs. They also seen to be investing heavily in athletics.

Knew Tarleton was growing and trying to move up in the athletic world, but not to that scale. I'm assuming they are trying to improve its attractiveness to prospective students from the DFW area. Bit surprised at its average football attendance, but maybe not after thinking about it a bit. I'll assume they have very good student attendance as there isn't much for college students to do around Stephenville. Tarleton has always had a close tie with Stephenville itself (college basically is in the center of town) so likely a good number of locals attend the games. Plus I would think a significant % of its alumni live within a 2-3 hour drive so it would be easy for them to attend without requiring an overnight stay.

It's also interesting that they would have their new basketball facility ready to go at the same time they potentially would be moving up to FBS. They've also invested in other facilities. They sponsor quite a few sports: football, baseball, men's and women's basketball, golf, cross country, indoor and outdoor track, and women's soccer, volleyball, beach volleyball, softball and tennis. They definitely look like a school that is capable of making the jump to FBS.

They likely knew that attractiveness to a FBS conference would take more than just a decent football stadium. Plus as part of the A&M system, they have access to low-cost facility loans from the Permanent University Fund. Plus I'll assume its quite a bit cheaper to build those facilities in Stephenville than at a school in a major city or metropolitan area. Also as the centerpiece and major employer in Stephenville, I feel sure they had much help from the city in facilitating the construction of the facilities. Not only is it likely much cheaper to build there, likely they can be built more rapidly.

You could hit a golf ball from Las Cruces to El Paso. With a nine iron.
It's the same market.

Do they take another UTEP located in the same market as you said, except likely with less money and appeal than UTEP, or take a chance on a growing school near a major metropolitan area that is part of a well-funded university system (unless they continue to give out more Jimbo Fisher type contracts).

Don't get me wrong, they've made it to the promised land ... the AAC. I mean as a program, have they hit their ceiling? Which is ... a middling G5 team?
