The more I read up on Tarleton State, the more I like them as a potential addition to the Mountain West. I thought this article was really insightful. Tarleton has surprisingly good attendance despite not being eligible for the FCS playoffs. They also seen to be investing heavily in athletics. They moved up from D2 to the WAC in 2020, same year as Dixie State. Seems like kind of a desperate add to me. Correct.
NMSU is a far better add. Which might not be saying much. Both can be true.
But the one dumba__ kid from NMSU (literally) pissed on UNM's practice field. They hold on to grudges like that for a long time ...

I think I'd rather have Tarleton State than NMSU.

As for the PAC ... I have no idea what football full-member they're going to target.
If you assume no one currently in the ACC (just saying it for completeness, not even suggesting anything), AAC, or MWC can be touched, and you look at Mountain and Pacific timezones with FBS or FCS football .... who is even left?? I think it's literally the Big Sky schools.
The one that would be easy from an academic standpoint is UC Davis. But doesn't seem like they have enough interest in their team?

Or a school that was DII in 2019. Hmmm....

Maybe they have to take NMSU? Perhaps Hawaii for all sports, not just FB?

I think it's the nearby ones in DFW that is the attraction. And a game every other year in the best football recruiting area in the country. How has that worked out for North Texas?
Don't get me wrong, they've made it to the promised land ... the AAC. I mean as a program, have they hit their ceiling? Which is ... a middling G5 team?
You didn't even comprehend what I wrote. I was talking about how the conference might be viewing the possible addition of Tarleton. North Texas was never going to be more than a middling G5 team. Realistically they've never really tried to be more than that. If Tarleton becomes that, I suspect they will consider it a success.

How does already being a FBS school make them a better add? NMSU was a bottom feeder in D1 when I was a kid and some 60 years later, it's not any better.

Yeah, Tarleton just finished transitioning to D1/FCS this year, eligible for NCAA post season events for the first time. Exactly one recruiting cycle at the D1/FCS level, recruiting without post season eligibility the whole time. Maybe someday down the road, but lets see if they can make an FCS postseason run first.

NMSU was a bottom feeder in D1 when I was a kid and some 60 years later, it's not any better. Two straight bowl games and 10 wins last year. It's too bad Kill quit, or whatever the hell happened. What is Tarleton's record as an FBS team, again? 0-0? Reminds me of that Family Guy episode. "Why would I take a boat when I can have a mystery box??? It could be anything! It could even be a boat!!"

But the FBS school is basically worthless. They'd literally just be a warm body to get to eight full members. At least the former D2 school has potential.

Kill had to step down because of his health issues. Similar to when he stepped down at Minnesota. He is some sort of special assistant at Vanderbilt right now. NMSU was just fortunate to have Kill. If it wasn't for his health issues, he would have never been available to them in 22 as he would have been coaching at a much higher level. They're are reverting back to form now.
