I'm curious if Grand Canyon is thinking about adding football someday. The Mountain West is likely a better basketball conference than the new WCC would have been after Gonzaga's departure, so maybe it's just about that. But they will be an outlier if they're the only non-football member. Edit: The Mountain West is also moving its headquarters to Las Vegas from Colorado Springs. That makes sense. More centrally located, easier to fly into, etc. The MWC has sent notice of interest to NIU (Northern Illinois) and Toledo, of the MAC conference for football only. Toledo is in the East Coast time zone, so they are probably less interested. But NIU is in the Central time zone and is interested in the MWC. If they jump, then GCU would be non-football and everything else MWC. MWC also offered Texas St. but they have declined for now if Toledo decides to join the MWC, they would have five time zones covered, which is appealing to TV and betting. Maybe I'm overvaluing the MAC, but why would Northern Illinois be interested in the MWC for football only?

From what I gather from NIU fans on Reddit, it seems that they're unhappy in the MAC right now. They really dislike playing football games on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and the MAC TV deal is very bad, apparently. They'd probably park their other sports in a non-football conference in the area. I was skeptical at first, but there are enough of these NIU fans who have made these arguments that I've become convinced that it's a real possibility.

They really think the MWC TV deal will be significantly better? The MWC is losing its most high profile schools. I can understand about the Tuesday/Wednesday games, but there's no guarantee that won't eventually happen to the MWC.

I think the MWC is starting the negotiating process for the next TV deal contract. They have already vetted the candidates and probably passed it through some media consulting firm that rates them for value. If the NIU is serious, they also must have vetted the MWC and the worthiness of making the move. If the MWC can get a jump on the Pac-12, they could get a better deal form the likes of TNT, CW, or Amazon.

I tend to think both the Mountain West and the Pac-7 will end up with less money than if they had just merged (the Pac-7 "brands" aren't that attractive), but it's definitely possible that it will still be more than the MAC. Edit: here's an article that was written by a journalist who appears to be based in Illinois. Not sure I totally buy all of it, but he make the case for a move.

The guy that wrote the article kinda makes me wonder if he forgot about the four teams leaving the MWC. Had to laugh about the MWC opening up recruiting in Texas. Needs to look at a map and see that UTEP doesn't exactly open up the state. But it does look like they are wanting to jump ship. I agree with you that a combination of the two conferences would have been a more effective idea.

Even if a meet is at another school in the same conference, you aren't scheduling "against" other teams in the conference It's really baffling to me how you keep trying to make this be a point. It has absolutely nothing to do with anything I'm talking about. The only actual point to discuss ... is travel.
