CUSA would probably take in UMass and UConn FB at this point. "UTEP you get to fly to New England every year. You in!?!" "UTEP has left the conversation"

UMass is independent in football right now and one of the worst FBS teams in the country. They're in the A-10 for their other sports. Tell me about it. and even worse? They have no volleyball team. I'm ashamed of my alma mater. Less than 30 minutes from the volleyball hall of fame and the flagship public university in Massachusetts and they can't field a team. Well...at least there's Marcus Camby from back in the day. And at least they beat UConn in football. I know those are cold comforts. Edit: Oh, and hockey. National champs.

Part of their recruiting pitch was probably talking about where they play. It probably sounded something like "We will take you places like Boca, Virginia Beach, Houston and San Antonio!" Now it would go "We are going to Amherst, Storrs, Ruston and Lynchburg!"

Well okay, what else are they gonna do? Go Independent?

WAC for all-sports and Independent for football until the WAC transitions back to FBS football in 4-5 years, just like NMSU up the road. It's not without risk, but it is a plan.

I would assist you then. We got 2 coaches. now we need some players.

I'm sure they were flying to the other Texas schools since the closest one was over 500 miles away. UTEP is closer to a number of schools in western states than it is to schools in the central and eastern parts of Texas.

I once heard a fact that stated: It's farther from Beaumont, Texas to El Paso, Texas than it is from El Paso to the Pacific Ocean. I never bothered to fact check it but it was an eye opener to how huge Texas is geographically.

It's roughly 590 miles from Beaumont to the nearest spot on the Pacific coast (just south of Tijuana). If you made a straight line, but stayed in the US, it's about 630 miles to the Pacific a bit north of San Diego. Texas is huge. To put it in perspective, Nebraska is a pretty large state at 77k square miles. Texas is nearly four times larger, at 268k square miles. To further put that in perspective, that makes Texas just a little less than half as large as Alaska, at 570k square miles. Note: no bananas were used in this comparison of scale.

The only school anywhere near UTEP is NMSU, and UTEP has prevented NMSU from joining their Conference every step along the way.
So I don't think nearby opponents is something that they place much value on.

Beaumont is a hot topic. They're hosting a WAC crossover today. Four matches within two days.
