I’ve got a Wisconsin sweep. I can’t see the Badgers losing to the same team twice. *ahem*

Purdue is my favorite Big 10 team. Well coached, lots of talent, solid volleyball. Hope my ducks don’t have to play them this year in the tournament.

So many people doubted Purdue without even considering their rough stretch of the season was without Hornung and/or Johnson. Since they have returned at full strength, this team is proving people wrong left and right. There’s a lot of season left, but I really hope recognition is given where it’s earned. Watch me say all of this and have Purdue get blown out Sunday vs. Minnesota… 😅 which matches were they without Hornung again? OSU and MSU? Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan State. She played at the start of the PSU match but she wasn't very mobile so they pulled her.

Just not a good match by the badgers. They are not supposed to error that often in attack. They are supposed to have a better block. The only match in the B1G they looked good in was Minnesota. Ever since the Nebraska match (and Civita going down again) they have looked jaded and searching for an identity. Even during the Nebraska match they had to ride Smrek unreasonably. Rettke has not looked very good lately. They can't seem to find any confidence setting or hitting out of the backrow - which they need to do in their current configuration.
Right now I do not fancy them to win the B1G, or to get past the elite 8. Without Hart they do not have a structure that they can depend on on block or attack half the time. Without Civita, they just do not have enough ball control to manage. They will be extremely lucky to host unless the young kids grow up quick.

Oof, I was really rooting for the Badgers this year but I think the loss of Civita is really hurting this team. They were able to somewhat cover the loss of Hart with Smrek and Demps, but there isn't anyone on the roster to replace Civita. They still have Minnesota and Nebraska left so hopefully they can put together a nice finish against those teams.
Props to Purdue for a great win! I wonder what their year would have looked like had Johnson/Hornung been healthy for the entire year. 100% a team to watch out for in the tournament.

Has Purdue ever made the Final Four? I don't think so. 8 B1G teams have (while they were in the conference, not just generally) - PSU, NE, WI, IL, MSU, Michigan, OSU, MN. Purdue really should be in this club and this could be the year. The NCAA draw is going to be nuts.

What is it with coaches falling in love with backrow attacks, to the detriment of other parts of their offense?
Demps having as many attempts as Rettke, and more than Robinson is messed up.

Is it the coaches demand to set the backrow? I feel like Hilley made many questionable setting choices from the little I saw of the game.

They’ve made the elite 8 a handful of times - the game that made me a fan of Purdue was when Purdue played Texas in the regional finals like in 2010 or 2011…. After taking down first seed Florida easily they were actually outplaying Texas until senior setter Hart went down with a leg injury. Turners sophomore year and with Cramer (my god she was good) as Libero - ugh. I still feel that if Hart never got hurt they would have beaten Texas. She was such a good setter.

I don't know what to make of it, but during a couple timeouts, Sheffield pulled Hilley aside and talked to her and her alone for most of the TO. I won't say I've never seen him do that with Hilley before - or Carlini, for that matter - but it is pretty darn unusual. Yes, Hilley had a pretty bad night. So did much of the rest of them. Serve-receive was doing her no favors... as has been noted, they miss Civita, a lot.

That match left a really bad taste in my mouth. Just an apathetic, disjointed effort. The whole energy of the match felt wrong from the start.
