Illinois in 4. The Terps lost at Iowa, so they won't win at Huff, but the Illini are inconsistent enough to frustrate their fans by losing a set (they may also frustrate a pod host's fans by defeating said host in the second round).

Illini came out of their usual slow start halfway through first set against Indiana. Even if they win their remaining home match, as they should, they still will end the season with a losing home record. At Michigan is the big remaining match, although screwing up against Maryland or MSU is still within the realm of possibility. They can look very good and very bad within the same match. Hope Collins is better, for herself more than for the team. Head injuries that take this long to resolve are frightening.

With Collins serving we have a back row of Collins, Cooney and Terry. Maybe the tallest back row we have ever fielded.

Maryland has a nice team, but watching them makes me wonder how they ever defeated Wisconsin. Illinois turned in a very steady Senior Day performance giving them 11 B1G wins with 2 remaining conference matches at Michigan and Michigan State. Michigan has 9 wins with home matches vs. Illinois and Northwestern remaining in conference. The best Michigan can do now is tie with Illinois for 7th place. I suspect both Illinois and Michigan will make the tournament and provide difficult competition for at least the first two rounds of the tourney.

Maryland has a nice team, but watching them makes me wonder how they ever defeated Wisconsin. I always contend that the top teams aren't top teams at the beginning of the season. Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Minnesota typically get better as the season rolls along but are kinda rough at the start.

Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Minnesota typically get better as the season rolls along but are kinda rough at the start. Maryland started the season 12-0 vs. weak competition. Wisconsin was their first B1G match. After defeating Wisky 3-2 the Terps lost their next 4 B1G matches. Wisconsin went on to win their next 10 B1G matches until Purdue upset them. I noticed a positive mention for Coach McCutcheon giving out senior flowers to Wisconsin seniors on Minny's Senior Day. I do not know how common this practice is in all conferences, but Coach Tamas and the Illinois seniors also gave out flowers to the Maryland seniors before the start of the match. Very nice tradition for the Illini and the other teams that do this!
