What’s with CC not playing? Injured? No specific injury has been mentioned.

I was actually a little down on the Gophers after last night's match. But they simply weren't the same team tonight. Without two of their three best players entering the season, they absolutely dominated Stanford. This was their best match against a quality opponent all year long, maybe even for two seasons -- outstanding play from so many different players! FANTASTIC!!
And then to top it off, our first real snowfall of the season began just as the match ended -- something else for Stanford to contend with in trying to get back to the West coast.

I see Francis and Miner certainly show emotions but the rest are like meh! Maybe, just maybe, not having a fiery, take charge libero makes a difference? This has been an issue all year. As a coach I don't know how you address it. Kip is a happy player no shade that's just who she is. Baird is an excellent player but you will never get a stare down from her. I would love to see them play with a chip but that's not who they are. Gray was a happy player but once in a while you would see her get ticked off after a tough joust or a dump, Hentz just led with her play I mean so much energy it practically lifted the whole team off the ground. This team has no motor except maybe Tafuga but she's never out there. Maybe some maturity and new blood will change things next season, I think it will. Go Card.

What is it with Disc808 and Wenaas? Trashtalk How much MN VB has this person watched?? According the the MN stats, she's hitting .218 on the season. I wouldn't consider her to be an elite attacker or first team AA quality (and no, I don't think this is considered trash talk). She had a great match tonight, however.

Except for the time they looked like national champs.
And the other time they looked like national champs.
winning a Natty with kids another coach recruited and got settled into NCAA play is not the same thing... just look at UCLA. I definitely agree -- one is not the same accomplishment as the other.
Still, winning an NCAA title in D-1 (let alone 2, or winning a World Championship and an Olympics) is really really really really difficult -- no matter what the circumstances. Even if you're Steve Fisher, and take over Michigan basketball like four days before the NCAA tournament starts, winning those 6 games in a row against the best teams in the country is an amazing accomplishment.
And I realize that people love diminishing the accomplishments of others, and throwing shade -- that's how the internet works. But I'm still stupid enough to occasionally respond to dumb comments that disrespect those who have accomplished things that 99.9% of us will never do. That's just one of my many character flaws.
Congrats and good luck to the Gophers -- they played quite well. As a fan, I wish Stanford had played above average instead of below average. But winning at this level is pretty damn hard, and Stanford wasn't nearly good enough tonight. So now I'm left to wishing that Stanford's players and coaches learned a lot from this year and grow, that they all can get and stay healthy for next season, and that actually having off-season training and bringing in a few new players gets them back into the mix next year.

I mean… Wenaas has been a serviceable outside and has the chance to be elite… but I don’t think she is ‘elite’ yet.. Wenaas is elite all-around when you consider what she brings. Hitting isn't as terminal as the Stanford 2 but she's almost as valuable as a complete player. She certainly was tonight. Just an all-around awesome game from her.

I haven’t seen a single gopher fan claim she’s a first teamer. Not this year anyway. Her all around play is something worth acknowledging though. Baird wishes. (Ok that was trash talk.)

Everybody seemed to plug the holes left by CC's absence. Serve receive was really strong. It might have been Miyabe's best match of the season. Kilkelly did a wonderful job anticipating where she needed to be.
First Gopher sweep over Stanford in program history.

This is one of the worst Stanford second round performances ever. Just no fight. They played at a very low level. Full credit to Minnesota who kept their foot on the gas but Stanford just looked very lackadaisical out there tonight.

Wenaas is just getting better and better. You can see her progression from last spring and early season this year to now. Amazing!
Tonight's performance was FANtastic! My thought is the team, knowing CC is down and Miyabe braced, came together on a mission to battle for every point like they never have before. The fans were energetic from the start and continued through to the end. Such a great match and I can't find enough superlatives.

They’re making Wenaas look like a first team AA She played like one tonight. She might be next season.

Kudos to the three voters in this poll who picked the Gophers to sweep!
