This is just horrible. I am visiting the gofundme in a bit. All the frisco people problems around here which are mostly ludicrous and you see something like this that brings you back to what really matters. I used to think it was cop out to cancel everything for a little snow/sleet but not anymore. As of last night something like 6,000 domestic flights have been cancelled due to weather. Traveling for volleyball was only an option if A. You live close enough to drive, and B. The tournament is taking place in an area only mildly affected by a snow storm. Lots of the girls who drove to Austin have been posting pictures of snow. I’m amazed. 🥶 4 clubs from my region pulled out of Lone Star due to weather. Already one tragedy related to driving to Austin. Venom volleyball in Arizona lost a player and has a couple others in critical condition from a weather related car accident on their way there 😓 gofund.me/699b0349

First of all I want to extend my condolences and prayers to anyone that may have been involved in an accident as a result of traveling to Austin. I’m truly heartbroken to hear about the tragedy that has been publicized, and any that may have not.
I was in Austin this weekend and got the chance to watch a good amount of gameplay from the big names and teams, including the 18 Open Championship.
My takeaways:
Harmony Sample (Madfrog/Notre Dame) and Rosemary Archer (Dallas Skyline/Pepperdine) are LEGIT. I would go so far as to say they are the two best setters in the state at this level now that Averi Carlson is at Baylor. Each playing six rotations, they controlled their offenses like nothing I have seen. Harmony is on the offense for the front three rotations, and is almost dominantly aggressive from the right pin. Rosemary’s athleticism allows her to keep her offense in system no matter where she’s from on the court. 10,20, even 30 feet off the net she was able to keep both pins effective.
Dallas Skyline’s dynamic defensive duo Emily Canaan (Florida) and Naylani Feliciano (Miami) are phenomenal. They swap the Libero jersey often, and they each made plays that left me completely dumbfounded. High level offenses like Madfrog’s had an extremely difficult time terminating the ball. They split the court on serve receive, and work in tandem in a way that is unlike any other.
Muscle 18 Black somewhat surprised me this weekend, considering their 8 woman roster and non-intimidating stature. Kenna Miller (Texas) was solid as usual and Halle Sherlock (Yale) has clean hands that work well in the favor of her feisty offense. They took Madfrog to three in the last match of the gold pools (which would determine who went to the championship) and even dominated at times.
Maya Duckworth (Madfrog/Iowa State) and Emily Hellmuth (Dallas Skyline/Pepperdine) were dynamic on the left. Duckworth (although a good six inches shorter than Hellmuth) more than makes up the difference with her unbelievable vertical and shot selection (not to mention her ability to slam the 10-foot line like no other). Hellmuth has the cleanest approach and wind up and arm swing that I have seen at this level. Her arm is long and powerful, and she can seriously snap it. Angle, line, tool, you name it. I enjoyed watching her be a force for her team and lead them to the gold hall. Her and Rosemary will be a fun and deadly combo in Malibu for the coming years.
Another Pepperdine commit (what is it with Pepperdine’s ‘22 class and the state of Texas??) Avery Shimantis, who is not as physically assuming as Hellmuth, was a key factor in Houston Skyline’s success this weekend. Also shotty but also able to pound away between a sliver of a gap in the block.
Anyone else in Austin? What did I miss?

I will add two that stood out to me, Skyline pin Janet deMarrias and Muscle Opp Jentry Lamirand really stood out to me, deMarrias was a hammer and Lamirand is so versatile she runs so many play sets and hits some crazy angles. I also liked the lefty from Excel that is going to Angelo St. I believe.

Thank you Texas1!
It's awesome to read first-hand accounts of the games.
Nice to see something other than just looking at scores.
Have to admit that after Muscle Blacks's performance on Saturday, I thought they'd do better today.

Really fun weekend in Atlanta at Beast of the Southeast this weekend. Great competition and fantastic matches all the way around. In the 16 Open semifinals, Upward Stars 16 Amy easily handled A5 15 Bob to move to the finals. In the other Semifinal, A5 16 Steve was up against 575 Volleyball 16 Paula. It looked like it was going to be a blowout as A5 took the first 25-8 but 575 battled back and took it to 3 sets, but lost 15-11 in the third. The final was a real treat as Upward Stars faced A5 Steve in a rematch of last years AAU Final. In an absolte war, Upward Stars took out A5 Steve 19-17 in a third set.
16 Open Standouts-
Upward Stars was amazing all around the ball and very solid defensively. In the final, A5 had a really tough time terminating and had to be creative in getting the ball to the floor. Carly O'Brien pin for Upward Stars was very impressive and could provide a floor denting kill when Stars needed a momentum swing, which she provided a few times in the 3 set match.
Brooke Crummel-(A5 Steve)- Really athletic middle with an unreal serve. She is very disciplined on the block and moves very well. Jaya Moore and Emma Duffield (A5 Steve) two very dynamic pins who have quite a bit of upside both menacing defensively and both have a very heavy arm.
Kaitlyn Moran- (Setter 575 Volleyball) It's an absolute joy to watch this young lady run a 5-1. She is absolutely lethal in system and may even be better out of system. Even with undersized pins and middles, she has defenders tripping over themselves trying to find the block as she is very unpredictable and accurate with her ball placement. She can really move the ball and will many times in a match, drop the jaw of spectators on both sides of the court with some of her tempo sets. Very effective on the block and can play defense as well which is refreshing to see in a setter. Addison McLarty- (OH 575) very versitle with an arsenal of crafty placement/line shots but can also provide power when needed.
17/18 Open
Was only able to watch the final match against A5 16 Gabe vs A5 Jing. This was a rematch from the Lil'Big South Final a few weeks back. In this meeting, it was pretty one sided as 16 Gabe dominated both sets.
It seems Gabe has found something taking a page out of Kelly Sheffield's book in utilizing Mia Hood (6'7) in the middle and MK Patten (6'7) on the RS creating an absolute wall to get through. While Junee Robinson (A5 Jing /LSU) is amazing to watch and can absolutley fly, the blocking, defense and relentless offensive attack from 16 Gabe seemed to be the story in the match. 17 Jing has a few new additions to the team from last year (Jurnee Robinson being one of them) that will certainly help them down the road once timing and chemistry take hold. Hannah Benjamin (16 Gabe) is really explosive and can really terminate from the pin. Logan Wiley (A5 Gabe) also compliments Hood in the middle and provides an much quicker dynamic to the offense. When in system, when Wiley is in the middle, the ball will pound the floor quicker than you can blink an eye.
I am sure I missed quite a few other standout performances from Atlanta. Feel free to chime in.

After being vetted, most issues seem to have logical explanations.
