I needed some good news on the volleyball front. I was getting very envious of fans of other programs. (Of course, generally speaking considering the amount of transfers, for every team getting a positive addition, there is a negative subtraction from another program.)

I had heard a rumor from another Volleytalker that Krista was headed to Illinois this morning. I did not want to get too excited about the great news until it was official. My fear was that somehow the good news would sour. My actual thought was could that new Notre Dame coach step in and steal Krista away from us?
I am celebrating Krista's arrival by spiking my midday coffee with Bailey's...lots of Bailey's!!

I always thought of her as their recruiting coach, the first mailing my daughter got had a questionnaire with instructions to send to Krista. On her bio it does say: Vansant helped recruit the Hoosiers 2020 freshmen class, which ranked No. 15 in the country, the highest ranked class in program history. It included the Hoosiers second highest ranked individual recruit in program history in No. 32 Tommi Stockham and two Under Armour All-Americans. From their camps page they also say: Prior to IU Vansant served as a Volleyball Program Assistant at Washington and oversaw recruiting for the program. Very interesting hire. Here's the part of her bio that caught my eye: "...As an outside hitter, Vansant left UW as the most decorated volleyball player ever to wear the purple and gold. In 2013, Vansant became the first Husky to claim the American Volleyball Coaches Association National Player of the Year award. She earned ESPNW National Player of the Year recognition for the 2014 season, her senior campaign. This past season the Huskies' retired her No. 16 jersey. In the 2013-14 season and 2014-15 season Vansant earned the Honda Sports Award, given to the best collegiate volleyball player." So in addition to her recruiting focus, she was a highly decorated (AVCA NPOY, etc.) OH. Now imagine Raina Terry getting the benefit of her OH coaching insights over the next 2 years (like tooling the outside block). Tamas and his coaching team have already shown terrific player development capability. This hire shows promise for attracting and developing pin hitters in particular.

Krista will not be the first Honda award winner to grace the volleyball court at Huff Gym. Mary Eggers (nee Tendler) was a First-Team All-American and winner of the Broderick Award (now the Honda Sports Award ) in 1989 as the nation's top collegiate female volleyball player. Mary (nee Eggers) Tendler has been the volleyball coach for many years now at Elon University and was inducted into the inaugural Illinois Athletic Hall of Fame in 2017!

Welcome to Illinois, Coach Vansant! This is the right move. Happy for her and the Illini!

I remember watching her play against the Illini in 2013 (I think) when she absolutely dominated - clearly the best player on the floor, even though we had Birks and McMahon. If she can coach and recruit even remotely as well as she played she will be a terrific addition. Welcome and good get Coach Tamas!!

Great get for ILLiNOIS. We have a National Team setter, OlympicMB & now former AVCA player of the year as coaches. What player would not want to come learn from this staff?? Lets get a nice transfer and run it back to the Final Four!

From the press release:
"Vansant will serve as the program's recruiting coordinator as well as training the six-rotation players and helping with offensive game plan"
Coach Reed played as a middle, as did our Volunteer Coach, to say the least. I don't think we have had a coach with a background as an outside hitter. Vansant's background and her assignments will be a good fit with our present coaching staff. It will be interesting to see if our offense changes focus.

Someone has already mentioned that this is just what the doctor ordered for rising Illini junior Raina Terry. Raina is a talent with a lot of potential. Now she will have a coach in the gym that can hopefully turn that potential into recurring match results.

As probably the only other septuagenarian on this board, I can observe you have earned the right to the extra Baileys in your coffee, without the need for special celebration.

For some reason Illinois is always the team I root for in the B10. What do you think of the chances of UI getting into the top 3 of the B10 this year?

I’m a Badger man. But I’m rooting for the ‘22 Illini. Team is on the rise…good for women’s VB and good for the B1G!
