Learned during the broadcast that Niki K. is transferring. She asked the coaching staff at the beginning of the season to redshirt her this year so she could use her grad year elsewhere. Nikki, Skyy and Parker are all in the transfer portal. Would you happen to know if any of the other eligible seniors are thinking of entering as well or are they done with their eligibility?

Sheesh. I wasn’t really surprised that none were returning to use their COVID year here but wasn’t sure if that was a Joe not having a scholarship or if it was a choice. I know UNC offers more than enough grad programs that could/should keep students happy.
If I’m a coach, I’m reaching out to Skyy like yesterday. Imagine what a great developmental coach could do with her skill set.

I don’t think any of them were offered an extension at UNC - but I think all of them are getting some very good interest from schools. Since these are all graduate transfers they could enter the portal early - Nikki took a red shirt this year specifically for that reason and a Skyy and Parker both graduate in December. Not sure if any of the other Seniors are going to use their additional year?

Watch Skyy go somewhere in the ACC and terrorize NC next year.

Or are they just getting their names out there so they have options since they could always come back if they like a new coach?

As far as I know - there has been no chatter that Coach is leaving - I think that is mostly just conjecture on VolleyTalk 😂😂😂

I just knew somebody had said his last extension was through 2022.

Yes, his contract is up. I'm assuming we'll know about an extension or not sometime this week.

With such hype about the last recruiting class and adding an ACC top grad player, this season was an unmitigated mess and hugely unsuccessful. This alone should be enough to not renew Joe’s contract, but when you add the damage Susan did to the team and individually it should be a no brainer. But we know how UNC is not that interested in making waves in non revenue generating sports especially Olympic ones. I expect and have heard that he will be renewed. But I still hope. He may be a nice guy but the time has come to let someone else spark the team with new energy.

The assistant coach thing was brewing from the moment she arrived. Many of the fans of UNC that I have read gave a “what???” type of response upon her hiring. Has the game passed Joe - I do not think so. Has his ability to relate to this generation of player, quite possible. Is UNC volleyball have an amazing history, I do not believe so. A few good years, a solid short run of relevance but overall not much to speak of. I believe UNC is one of the schools that recruit across the country simply by name recognition, but not because of their volleyball program.

Definitely. That’s where a lot of the frustration has come from. That short run of success was occurring and didn’t look like it was going to go away as we were starting to accumulate top talent and wins over Big 10 teams like Penn State and Wisconsin, as well as USC and Stanford in the Pac.
When Eve and Tyler left it provided the sense that the success we were having was because of the assistants and staff more than Joe. There’s a championship culture at UNC but volleyball (and softball) are the programs that do not really match that.
We are able to recruit by name recognition but imagine what the program could be with all that talent coming in and being developed… and more importantly not having most of the ranked recruits transferring out.

Our UNC is a place that every top athlete considers and wishes to have recruit them. Volleyball is no different. But then it all stops when they come here. No development and no support. Joe is very dismissive of anyone complaining about anything. Girls have complained about Susan for years and he dismissed it until Susan physically pushed a player. Being dismissive like that and pushing freshmen to play because of parent demands made him lose the team connection, mostly with current seniors. That’s another reason to not renew his contract. It feels like there is no plan in the program for years now.

we should know this week about Joe....however....Bubba was at both home games this week which is unlike him. However, he saw 2 wins against 2 other mediocre teams and will take that as doing a great job.

SEC has 7 teams in the tournament, while BIG10 and PAC12 have 6. ACC and BIG12 have 5. I find that a little troubling since SEC has.a weird system where you play the same opponent twice over the weekend either at home or away. Does anyone know how RPI accounts for that? IMHO BIG10 should have most teams and then the rest. That conference is crazy strong.

IMHO BIG10 should have most teams and then the rest. That conference is crazy strong. That system ends this year. They did it the previous year for Covid purposes and then flipped it this year for competitive purposes, but they’re doing away with it for 2023. That doesn’t address anything else you’re posting about, though. My personal preference is that each team is evaluated on their own merits regardless of conference affiliation. I understand it will always be a factor, but I’m insensitive to arguments that a specific conference should have more tournament participants because of its perceived strength. But that’s just my opinion, and I’m certainly open to differing views.
