New York Yankees are the exception to every rule, when it comes to baseball. More seriously, there has been a trend recently in MLB HOF voting toward breaking certain unwritten rules. One of those was that nobody should ever get unanimously voted in, because the historical icons were not unanimously voted in. There also used to a few die-hard voters who refused on principle to elect ANYBODY in their first year of eligibility (for some strange reason of tradition). Rickey Henderson should have been unanimous but only got 95%. Randy Johnson should have been unanimous, but only got 97%. Ken Griffey Junior got 99.3%, and it became clear that the barriers to 100% were weakening. It will be interesting to see what happens with Ichiro Suzuki, because there is no possible justification that he is not a HOF player. Yes, that's true. A lot of people should have been unanimous, but because Babe Ruth and Willie Mays weren't, there were always some holdouts. I always thought that was one of the single dumbest things in any sport, and I was glad that Rivera was the first, and I hope it continues for obvious cases. Rickey Henderson was one of the more galling cases in my view. There was just no reason whatsoever to not vote for him. I agree that Ichiro should be unanimous.

Rickey Henderson was only the ALL TIME LEADER IN RUNS SCORED, but 5% of the voters didn't vote for him?

I will note that because of the specific rules of the HOF voting, there was some strategic voting going on. People maybe didn't vote for players they were certain were going to be elected anyway, so that they could use their votes to push for other players who were more marginal.

I remember being apoplectic that Henderson only got 95% of the vote.

I don't know about that. Mariano Rivera was inducted into the Hall of Fame unanimously on 425 ballots. New York Yankees are the exception to every rule, when it comes to baseball. #truth

I am happy for Rettke, but mostly very sad that Samedy never got NPOY. She was the best 6 rotation player this year for me.
