I thought the deal on Caffey was if they gave her a scholarship this year it would have to count for 2 this year, or one this year and next year. Something to do that she had a masters degree from NU. They thought she had it covered with NIL, but in the end I guess she didn't. I don't think they were ever planning for her to be on scholarship once they found out it was going to cost them 2 to do it. I don't know for sure though, just what I read. If Cook wanted Caffey she would be here. I was told that Cook believed that the Big Ten Championship and the NCAA Championship went thru Wisconsin and that he wasn't sure Nebraska could beat them with a 6'0 MB. Last year 6'0 Caffey was looking across the net and seeing 6'8 and 6'9. Caffey was giving up 8'' and 9'' to them and that is just too much to overcome. That would be like Nebraska's 6'4 MBs looking across the net and seeing MBs that stand 5'7 and 5'8. At times it seemed like Caffey was the only one you could count on for a kill but the quick set over the middle is pretty much the extent of her game. I don't know why he didn't try Schwarzenbach against Wisconsin. this is a little bit ridiculous lol. caffey had the second most kills with the highest hitting percentage for nebraska in last year final. that match wouldn't have gone 5 without her. also, the height at which one touches tells more than difference in height. I would bet caffey jumps about 6 inches higher than both smrek and Rettke. its not like they were going over her all match and thats why Nebraska lost.

Caffey gets her kills with quick sets over the middle just above the net. She's very good at that. She's a good player but she is just undersized for a MB. If Caffey stood next to Rekke or Smrek and they raised their arms both Smrek and Rekke would touch at least a foot higher than Caffey. Taller people have longer arms. And I doubt that Caffey could jump anywhere near 6" higher than them jumping basically flat footed in front of the net. MBs don't get the benefit of a running start before they jump on defense most of the time. It's just stand in front of the net and jump. Plus Rekke is pretty athletic so I'm sure 6'' higher is an exaggeration. Smrek and Rekke (and even Demps) had a field day in last years Championship match. Caffey had many big kills for Nebraska last year but she is just too short for a MB. If you want ridiculous then keep telling everyone that a 8 and 9 inch difference in height makes no difference then go ahead.

Why are we still talking about this…
The NCAA granted her additional year but told Nebraska if she played again after the fall semester, it would put them over 12 for the spring and they would incur a one scholarship penalty. Cook did the math and saw Allick, Hord and Maggie as enough at middle. Bringing Caffey back on scholarship would have cost them the chance at someone in 2023. Which turned out to be Choboy. Would you rather have 1 more year of Caffey or 4 of laney?
The deadline to tell Kayla was June 30th which they did. But that’s late in the process and Caffey and Cook weren’t seeing the situation the same. So she enters the portal and ends up at Texas. The end.

Yikes! Not great for Nebraska, but really stinks for her!

I've watch Nicklin play for 5 years, and though I've often rooted against her, it sucks to see her career (potentially) end like this. she deserves better.

Caffey was doing just fine, and she wasn’t the only 6’ middle cook had relied on.

You could add Kenzie Knuckles here too. It is what it is. You work around it and try to make your front line defense harder to hit over , through or around. Tipping and finesse shots by opponents will happen more often now. The donut hole becomes larger. Become more opportunistic on offense with player(s) who terminate better or have fewer unforced errors. Like maybe Mangelson. . Each succeeding opponent stresses the whole team and the pressure more reveals weaknesses or lack of strengths. Hopefully, in theory. I've watch Nicklin play for 5 years, and though I've often rooted against her, it sucks to see her career (potentially) end like this. she deserves better.

Awful news about Hames. You hate to see someone so prolific for their program go out like that.

I don’t know the answer. But if the answer is no, your short answer doesn’t make sense. Lauren exhausted her eligibility; I don’t remember if Hord was on board during that time; then you have 2 freshmen coming in. If cook could have Caffey (without costing 2 scholarships) why would he not want her on the roster. The Texas (fans) narrative just doesn’t add up.

Why? Not sure but envy comes to mind...
