Four untested middles could be a coach's nightmare. Much like three untested freshmen hitters. 😉

As a general rule, the AD hires the coach, and then the coach hires their assistants. That's not to say the AD couldn't put their thumb on the scale, but the smart AD allows the coach to pick the staff. Does the AD always defer to the retiring coach on who to hire? I mean, I know that's how Frank Solich succeeded Tom Osborne, but still. If you're talking about who Cook hires as assistants, than sure. But I think the conversation is about who would succeed Cook when he retires. No, the AD doesn't always defer to the retiring coach. IMHO, with Cook's track record of finding coaching talent, I find it hard to imagine a situation where his opinion wouldn't be sought and weigh heavily in Albert's decision.

Cook will have a lot of say in his successor. Not worried, remember, Trev hired Buttermore. He's 1-for-1 anyway, with Cook consulting, they'll find a great successor.

Am I the only one who didnt see Tyler as Cook's "heir"? I have a feeling its going to be DBK or bust (or maybe Skinner... but thats an idk) Well he dipped twice, which isn’t the Husker way.

I like Tyler, and I’d be fine if he stayed, but Nebraska never really seemed like a fit, in the way that, say, LBSU, his alma mater, is a fit. Grateful for his time, but I think his home is calling him elsewhere.

Crawford is a perfect fit. Hord can hit over any block and Cook has said that (and shook his head) in a couple of interviews when asked how the Huskers would defend against her. I am sure that they considered the interpersonal fit before they ever talked to her.

I could actually see Crawford at Nebraska, following a recent trend of nice finds at the MB position (Caffey, Holman). I think Allick and MM would be ready to contribute offensively but blocking is where they would need more time to adjust to the college level.

Hord is an absolute no-brainer if she wants to come. She has physicality you can't coach.

All this talk of Cook's successor is premature IMO. He has said he will coach for 3 more years, and with his recent recruiting success probably at least a few years beyond that. A lot can happen in that time frame with respect to replacement candidates.

A lot can happen in that time frame with respect to replacement candidates. Agreed. I hope that Coach Cook is able to coach for long time more and most importantly, I hope that he remains in excellent health in the years to come.
