Can i just say while I don't always agree with his "slow to call timeout" and not subbing struggling hitter approach, Wisconsin is lucky to have Kelly Sheffield. What I never doubt is his character and how much he cares about the girls.

I don't wanna think about next year yet. Me either. I just try to get a jump on creating the thread because in the past when we wait, it gets created for us by people with less than benevolent intentions.

OK, one bit of "next year" worth noting:
in a 'comment' under a main tweet last week, Dennis Punzel of the State Journal mentioned that Wisconsin has two scholarships still available for next year. I assume he's in a position to know.

I there there could be the possibility of a 6’2”.

I am curious if Reed is being trained as a libero? We have Boyer, MacDonald and Reed and Gregorski for our smalls. As far as Orzol goes, is she capable of hitting over the block? She is explosive off the floor, but am curious what her approach touch is? She seems to have an arsenal of shots, but am wondering why she struggled at the end of the year.

I just wanna say that I’m an al-in Orzol fan. Early this year, I saw in a Polish national press release about Julia that stated that her measured spike height was 310cm, or about 10’2”. Thatz pretty good for any hitter, and it certainly seems legit (passes the eyeball test). Personally, I just think the answer to her inconsistency is some rest - mental and physical. I just see a B1G frosh who started and played 6 rotations on every point in 30 plus matches this year. On the surface, that seems amazing in and of itself. Given the rigor, and all the block scheming and targeting (serve) that opposing teams brought against her, especially during the last half of the season, it could be that simple. Give her time. Sheff will help her figure it out. ‘22 will be a big year for her. As for our back row, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Ashburn in the libero spot next year. I also won’t be surprised to see Sheff go after a big-time transfer to fill the spot. Barnes and Gio exiting, is leaving a huge hole.

If Ashburn did not stay in to play defense the other two rotations after serving, she's not playing libero next season. Well, she was in serving for Rettke. So leaving her in would mean leaving Barnes out. And of course you don't do that. The other option for Izzy to stay in would have been for Rettke to serve all the time, and Izzy to sub in for Orzol. Dana is an OK server, but Orzol is both a pretty good server and a pretty good backrow defensive option. I don't know who will be libero next year, but Izzy not staying in this year, I don't think, tells us much. The better indicator as far as Izzy goes is 2019, when she did sub in and stay for three rotations. During that season, she had VERY few serve receive 'attempts', even while playing three rotations back. Her floor defense has improved greatly since then, but whether it is all enough to be an option at libero is still doubtful.

I’m kinda bummed Anthouli changed her mind, but love the pieces coming back. I think the Badgers need at least an elite libero and reliable DS from the portal. We will also miss Syd’s speed and defense; I gotta rewatch the 2020 Minny match but I remember Hammill having smooth hands but wasn’t as quick as Hilley. We need Dilfer quick!

Lol acting like Sheffield isn't gonna manage a proven libero from the portal. (as he should)

The point is you change one position and player, and it has other implications for other positions and players. It affects the whole lineup, and those other changes have to be considered and 'balanced' with the goal of improving the team as a whole.

I am hoping we see an international recruit or two in 2022 and or 2023. It's not only deoth at a few positions that are a concern, but to continue to remain in the BT elite, we need to have balanced classes. We did lose Anthouli and had an athlete medically retire. Plus we lost out on numerous 2023s. Positive thing is being a National Champion should result in significant recruiting for the program.
