She could have served for someone else if her defense was good enough to be a libero. That's not the point. The point is you change one position and player, and it has other implications for other positions and players. It affects the whole lineup, and those other changes have to be considered and 'balanced' with the goal of improving the team as a whole. It absolutely is the point. If she was a passers or defender worthy of playing, they would have figured that out. |

I am curious if Reed is being trained as a libero? We have Boyer, MacDonald and Reed and Gregorski for our smalls. As far as Orzol goes, is she capable of hitting over the block? She is explosive off the floor, but am curious what her approach touch is? She seems to have an arsenal of shots, but am wondering why she struggled at the end of the year. Reed is the weakest passer of the smalls. There will be at least one more added to the group next fall. |

If she was a passers or defender worthy of playing, they would have figured that out. Was she a better option than Civita or Barnes this year? Obviously not. Might she improve enough to be an option along with Boyer and Anna Mac next year? Maybe. We'll see. But she will be part of a team and lineup, where different aspects and options will be considered.the perfect example was the mid to late season "experiment" of replacing Boyer with Demps as the back row sub of Smrek. I have no doubt at all that Boyer is a better option from a defensive point of view. But the back row offense that Demps provided easily outweighed the defensive difference. Yok can't change or think about a player/position without considering how it changes the lineup as a whole. Volleyball is VERY integrated; everything affects everything. |

Demps and Wrobel at OH Smrek and Hart at MB Robinson at RS Hammil or a highly touted transfer at Setter Orzol at Libero/DS Hatfield from Notre Dame at DS/Lib  ? |

Orzol at libero makes no sense to me.
I, too, am curious about Ashburn. When she was playing three rotations, I thought her defense was solid. And she has setter hands.

Ahburn wore the libero jersey at this year's red v white. I couldn't believe that she was as good as she was in serve receive. I'm not sure how she responds to being left back. Not sold on the idea, but could be convinced of it. |

Transfer libero (just keeping it real)
I dont hate the idea of a 6-2 since our middles hit best jumping off 2 feet, but no team running a 6-2 has won it all since USC in 2002, and it was their third year running a 6-2 with the same setters.

If Ashburn did not stay in to play defense the other two rotations after serving, she's not playing libero next season. Well, she was in serving for Rettke. So leaving her in would mean leaving Barnes out. And of course you don't do that. The other option for Izzy to stay in would have been for Rettke to serve all the time, and Izzy to sub in for Orzol. Dana is an OK server, but Orzol is both a pretty good server and a pretty good backrow defensive option. I don't know who will be libero next year, but Izzy not staying in this year, I don't think, tells us much. The better indicator as far as Izzy goes is 2019, when she did sub in and stay for three rotations. During that season, she had VERY few serve receive 'attempts', even while playing three rotations back. Her floor defense has improved greatly since then, but whether it is all enough to be an option at libero is still doubtful. We'll agree to disagree. |

Ashburn knew that coming in. At minimum I think she'd get the same role she has now.
