Some more questions:
1) When a player signs to a pro club, does that club has "rights" over her or can she move around as she see fit? Can she just quit and move to a different club?
2) For those more well-versed in this, what's a better model for a developing player? Going through the NCAA process or a pro club team? I realize that's a difficult question.
3) How popular are the pro clubs in general in terms of attendance? I believe someone mentioned before that several were sponsored by corporations who got a tax break for doing it. Do they usually fill the seats?

Some are one year, some can be 2+.... if they break a contract... teams will be very salty and might not hire you (Holly Toliver got in trouble for this) 2. Depends... each has its own pros/cons for each player and their goals. 3. Their arenas definitely aren't as big as the NCAA's.... but big events have a passionate following. The Club World Championship had an attendance of 14-15k... The Euros had almost 20k for the final I Think.

Thanks.
Next question.
Say you're a player like Orzol in Poland who's turning 18 (graduating from high school in US lingo). Are there any other options other than turning pro for those leaving the European equivalent of high school? Is joining a pro club their only option?

Are there any other options other than turning pro for those leaving the European equivalent of high school? Is joining a pro club their only option? do you mean as in playing volleyball? there's all sorts of levels of volleyball in europe. Most of the countries/leagues have a ton of different divisions (with promotion/relegation)... some are amateur, part-time, etc.

I could use an explanation of what CEV Cup and Challenge Cup and Champions League are and what each of their formats are.

Do they usually fill the seats? adding on to avid 2.01) Filling out the contract is a necessity. Other than Tolliver, a big name is Taylor Sander on the mens side, who broke his contract in Poland to pursue beach instead. The club was/maybe still is considering legal actions as a result. Think there's also some drama with a Brazilian mens player breaking his contract in Italy to go be a social media influencer or something lol. 2) I think that if you want to develop as a player, no question that going through the pro scene is better. Higher level of play and coaching, better teammates, you just get trained in better volleyball. However, it's been pretty well noted that post-grad players can struggle to re-assimilate into society. Going to college/playing for a degree is probably the best way to prevent that from being an issue, even if you're sacrificing some development. 3) It depends on the league/team. In Europe, mens volleyball is probably more popular, and in leagues like Poland or Russia most teams have awesome crowds. Women get crowds too, but it depends. In Turkey/Italy, I'd say the top teams are the ones getting biggest crowds and have the best fanbases while the lower level teams probably don't have that many people watching.

I could use an explanation of what CEV Cup and Challenge Cup and Champions League are and what each of their formats are. Champions League is the highest level competition. (champions... lol) Teams are qualified by winning their league or placing near the top (long story short: leagues are allocated a certain number of spots in the champions league based on their performance in previous years) (Turkey, Italy, Russia get 3 spots, Poland gets 2, etc) CEV Cup and Challenge Cups are extensions of that, just with teams that placed lower in their respective european leagues. (Eczacibasi placed 4th in Turkey, so they missed out on the Champions League... so they were placed in the CEV Cup... 5/6th in the league were sent to the Challenge Cup) Champions League Format: Pool Play (groups of 4, complete round robin)... 5 pool winners and 3 best ranked 2nd place teams advance to knockouts. Knockouts are two legs, winner of the most points advance (most points is 3 points for a 3-0/3-1 win, 2 points for a 3-2 win, 1 point for a 2-3 loss, 0 for 0-3/1-3). Final is one match, winner take all. CEV and Challenge Cup are both purely knockout competitions, no pool play. Each leg is two matches, winner advances. Final is one match, winner take all. that's a very condensed version lol

Thank you! That helps a lot. So for THY, for example. Full round robin means play each team in your pool both home and away, so they are 1-2 now but play each other team in the pool one more time (and have to either win that pool C or be one of the top 3 of the 5 second place teams?)

Yep. THY really aren't in a good spot.... They have the toughest group. They need to beat Moscow (Who they lost to in 5) and take some points from Novara to have a chance to advance. They're in 3rd place rn

I have a um… confusing background! Born and raised a Texas fan, ended up going to arizona for scholarship money and ended up working with the volleyball team. Love both, but I don’t know much of the history of Arizona volleyball, whereas I’ve watched a decade of Texas. Plus the Texas fans on here are awesome, the arizona fans are… well what fans?
