Cowell is too experienced and mature to NOT start. She will start. Whether she plays the whole match/season remains to be seen but there is no way someone like Cowell does not start. Akana could beat her out but unless she improved her passing, I think Cowell will get the nod. Bad passing means Igiede is taken out of the equation so passing should be priority #1. Both Wagoner and Cowell were primary passers last season. According to Koavball, Riley and Chandler are looking good so at this time, those two are slated to be the starting OHs. Alexander will get her shot but I doubt she has the ball control now to be a good all around D1 left side hitter. I will say, I had a brain fart and completely forgot about Cowell. Could easily see her beating out Riley or Alexander.

Nebraska, Texas 1-2 in WVB preseason poll; Wahine RV; Bronze for U.S. men in Pan Am CupCindy Luis August 15, 2022 Excerpt: Nebraska received fewer first-place votes than Texas but the Huskers claimed the top spot in Monday’s AVCA Top 25 preseason poll on points. Nebraska, with 24 votes, had 1538 points while Texas, with 27 votes, had 1528 points. Receiving the other first-place votes were No. 3 Wisconsin (12) and No. 4 Louisville (1). The Badgers defeated the Huskers 3-2 to win in 2021. Wisconsin defeated Louisville 3-2 to advance to the title match while Nebraska upset Pitt 3-1 in the other semifinal. Hawai’i had enough votes to garner 48 points, good enough for 35th place. The Wahine are the only Big West team mentioned in the poll. Hawai’i will play four ranked teams in the preseason: No. 6 Pitt, No. 12 UCLA, No. 24 USC and No.. 25 Sa Diego. Texas State had 3 points, good for 41st place. S - Lang OPP - de Goede or Westerberg (Edmonds) OH - Wagoner, Cowell MB - Igiede, Evans L - Ikenaga
I don't think an unproven Alexander will beat out a DI starter in Cowell. At least not in the first night. This isn't 2019, when Ah Mow had no options and had to start freshmen.
Ikenaga will also likely hold on to the libero spot. She's not flashy, but she did beat out Gong and Hanawahine last year. Edmonds may have a shot, though. Speaking of Edmonds, I think she won't get beat out by Matias.
Akana has had many opportunities but I'm afraid she's not starter material.
If Ah Mow uses a serving sub or another DS, it might be Ham. That was her role at Cal Poly.

my prediction for opening weekend, based on blind assumptions that a) matias has proven she deserves to be on the court and is one of the "six" b) neither de goede and westerberg have taken the lead as the opp and c) colwell has proven to be a serviceable 6 ro outside
6-2
Setter: Lang, subbed by Akana in front row Outside 1: Wagoner Middle 2: Igeide (serving) Opp: de Goede, sub by Matias in back row Outside 2: Colwell Middle 1: Westerberg Libero: Edmonds
Westerberg and Akana can switch when they are in the front row together depending on what is needed, with westerberg blocking whichever hitter is the biggest threat. from the clips, i still question westerberg's ability to close a block.
all this to say - many of us thought hanawahine was going to get the start at libero last year and that didn't happen so who knows? for all we know, byrd cements herself as a 5-1 setter.

I'm not sold on Edmonds. I don't have the big ten network so LOL. Maybe she's a better defender than passer idk.
I do though think that Matias will long term be the better investment bc of her beach experience.

I don't think Tayli loses her libero jersey. I do wish to see Alexander starting maybe for west virgina game, would like to see her get playing time as a freshman to see how she is and what she needs improving during game time. I have not seen any practice videos of Evans, and I don't know maybe we will see Tiffany in the middle a few times before Evans.

MSU would be a middling Big West team. (ok maybe upper middle) I'm not convinced Edmonds will win a DS job. That said who knows what could happen in the off-season.

Yea and I remember reading in a MSU related thread that their lack of consistency in the Libero position was an issue for them and it seemed like off of Edmonds own statements that she feels like Ikenaga’s game is more efficient and that’s what you need from a Libero at the end of the day, efficiency and consistency. I really like the thought of a Wagoner, Cowell, and Ikenaga primary passing line. I only think Matias sees DS time if she hasn’t passed Byrd on the depth chart for setters.

I wonder how many players in states neighboring Texas are being heavily recruited by Hawaii right now?
Would be a good idea to get them tickets to the games, not sure how much limitation there is on the program as far as what they can pay for in terms of travel and stay.
Hopefully will do so for recruits that have already verballed like Stella.
