I hope we have some walk on DS's from Hawaii high schools, I hope some of the HS players who stay home maybe goes out for the team. At there any current backrow players who aren’t committed that could make an impact? Hoping for Hehea Pulotu She was named Hawaii All-Tourney and her Kahuku team mates Chalei and Mele were not

Hoping for Hehea Pulotu She was named Hawaii All-Tourney and her Kahuku team mates Chalei and Mele were not Unfortunately, Hawaii have had hard luck landing walkons from Kahuku. They tend to gravitate toward Utah. Utah is a good fit for them because of the Mormon influence and a heavy Polynesian population in Salt Lake City. With Talia, KJ and Tayli coming back, maybe some of the walk ons might be hesitant to come. All three are entrenched as backrow for next year also. UH could also be going after more polished transfers next season to replace Ham and Edmonds. Of course, if someone wants to walk on and willing to redshirt then UH will gladly take them but I think these All Staters will be looking for somewhere to play and not redshirt. Also a school like UNLV with Jhenna Gabriel and Isha Knight doing well there the Lady Rebels will become a player in going after Hawaii volleyball players.

Training with experienced DSes and playing in front of a home crowd might be of value to Pulotu. Also UH won't go after polished DS transfers. It will be the opposite lol

Wouldn’t be a bad idea to get another DS to learn the system and be ready when the the older libs vs hoping to have a stellar freshman starter or a transfer, especially if they can’t get here in the spring.

We have one of the better Wahine back court and serve receive in quite some time I think, with Tayli, Edmonds, Ham, Wagener. Really nice to have a Wahine defensive team that represents that solid back court tradition.

Hawaii at 43 in the latest RPI futures; one more predicted loss this season 👀

Let’s not forget when Ikenaga got injured and we didn’t have a suitable backup for the DS position for Alexander. Thinking back to last year when Hanawahine left the team in the early season. Imagine if Ikenaga got injured or couldn’t play?

Imagine if Ikenaga got injured or couldn’t play? When she went down suddenly just before a match, it wasn't something they'd specifically prepared for. Now they've got three games under their belt without her, they've got practice time and game experience w/o her, and the staff has experience prepping, planning, and running a match w/o her. Going forward w/o her in the future if need be, shouldn't shock and adjustments should be quicker. Of course she'd be sorely missed, and the game options and bench would thin, so clearly a problem. Just not as huge a bump in the road as the first go-around.

If you think about it, all of the DS’s are starters with no current backups besides the pin players playing 6 rotations

Does it say anything that Cowell wasn't used to replace Alexander? Is Alexander ahead of Cowell offensively and defensively or are they giving Alexander reps to get her ready for the future?

Try watching some of Cowells matches last year.. her passing was pretty bad in all the matches I watched.

Imagine if Ikenaga got injured or couldn’t play? Maybe more DS will show interest in UH now with the way Robyn is using Kendra and Talia regularly. I think it's possible that the 2019 season with the much-hyped "no libero lineup" might have made UH less appealing to potentional DS/liberos, especially the walk-ons. Okino wasn't used much until the end of the season, Hanawahine wasn't a regular in the rotation, and Gong basically didn't play after having a fairly regular role in 2018. Robyn has brought in Akiu, Ikenaga and Edmonds (plus Ham). Far from what Dave used to do. When Robyn took over in 2017, she inherited Kahakai, Guinasso, Anderson, Okino and Gong from Dave.
