The game of volleyball passed them a long time ago. They neither understand today’s game nor today’s players. Shame on U of M for letting them coach this long.

I am reserving my 2022 post mortem for after Friday’s final match, but the Rosen’s deserve nothing but respect for the body of work they have done with this program over 24 seasons.

Just watched the Iowa match. Enough is enough. The Rosens need to be done. Leisa Rosen is a complete psycho. The Iowa players just said those exact words to the Michigan players. Just watching the fifth set - why were two men protecting the bottom ref?? What happened?

You know what? My heart will always want U-M to make the NCAA Tournament, so them blowing this game the way they did to solidify that they won't be making it actually did me and my heart a favor.
I'm bummed. I had such high hopes for this team this year.

Does Rutgers pop them tonight? Not a chance. Sweep. MSU is really talented. Iowa caught them and played great after getting killed early. Road games are xtra tough in November.

The first set was a little close for comfort, but the team woke up and played very strong in sets two and three.
It was fun to hear the broadcasters get so excited for Liu and the rest of the seniors. And to also see everyone get in and contribute.
The game was hard to watch knowing the season is over.
The senior class represented the Block M well over the last four years and if this is the end for them, they have much to be proud of.

Called the sweep.
Probably 1 loss from making the tourney. Not a team anyone would want to play.

2022 Season Recap The easy thing to do here is to start piling on to what was clearly a disappointing season, but I want to start with a few positives: Jess Robinson had a breakout year offensively, finishing at a career high .438 hitting percentage; Jess Mruzik finished at 3.68 k/s, 6th best in the B1G; and Hannah Grant was a beast all year, finishing second in the conference with 346 digs at 4.81 d/s. This level of talent and these types of performances should not have resulted in a 9th place finish in the conference and missing the tournament for only the fourth time in the 24 year tenure of the Rosen's, but here we are.
On October 7, Michigan was 12-2 overall and 3-1 in the B1G, having scored two impressive road wins with a sweep at Penn State and a four set win against a healthy Northwestern team. Things appeared to be on track. But from that point they proceeded to finish the season 5-11, with notable losses against Indiana, Illinois and Iowa. They were repeatedly drubbed by the top 4 teams in the conference, never really threatening in any of those contests. So what happened?
One clue to this season's woes can be traced all the way back to opening weekend in August. Michigan went down to Northern Arizona for the Lumberjack Classic and started the season in a 5-2, with Scottee Johnson setting in the front row and Maddie Dowd in the back. Johnson would go down in the second match that weekend with an injury (was she ever fully healthy this season?) and Dowd proceeded to run a 5-1 for the next several matches. Dowd, a senior, had not seen much play time on this team prior to this season. Her role had primarily been as a backup to Welsh in 2019 and to Johnson in 2020 and 2021. Was Johnson's injury the impetus for the change or did the coaches not like what they were getting out of her in the 5-1? Either way, Dowd's presence clearly opened up our middle attack and Jess Robinson was the biggest beneficiary. Michigan's non-con schedule was very soft, so many fundamental blemishes were easily covered up. But the B1G teams loomed.
Fast forward to October 7. Michigan switched up to a 6-2 for the first time at home against Minnesota, an offense they would stubbornly stick to for the remainder of the year. In theory it made sense, establish a bigger blocking presence up front with Nyambio in as a second MB/OPP against the bigger ball thumpers in the B1G. But this was done at the expense of better ball handling in the back row from Beals and Hallgren. (The removal of Beals as a DS was especially curious. At the first Northwestern match, she went on a huge service run that completely flipped the momentum of that match. She was was barely seen again after that until the very end of the season when it was already too late to recover.)
Running the 6-2 put additional pressure on our OH2's to perform. There was no answer on the roster however. Murray started the season, eventually replaced by Jacobs, who was eventually replaced in desperation by Hallgren. Murray and Jacobs both struggled in serve receive and piled up hitting errors. It was easy for opponents to load up on Mruzik and the poor passing led to a diminished middle offense. Grant could only run down so many balls, and the losses started piling up in turn.
It's easy to look back and point fingers at the coaching staff. Why did we completely abandon Pertofsky's serve? How are we still mismanaging challenges and TO's? Why the major switch in offensive systems mid-season? But I would remind those calling for a coaching change that if we lose recruits in that process, we will end up looking more like Michigan State than Ohio State. The Rosen's built this program from the ground up, made a Final 4 and have consistently qualified for the tourney despite subpar facilities and investment from the athletic department.
This is going to be a very interesting off season. Our thoughts are first and foremost with Mark Rosen as he battles his health issues and I hope we get to see him again on the sidelines leading this team. If there is going to be a change, then it needs to come with the promise of a new facility or a full commitment to Crisler (MSU figured out how to do it) otherwise there will be dark days ahead for the program. Next season brings a new setter and an exciting international opposite, so hope springs.
Go Blue!

Good for Mruzik and Grant.
Jess Robinson was hosed.
