First set of the scrimmage: ran a 6-2 with Koch (Renner) and Chinn (Grace) at opposite. Ellis was at OH with Hornung DS. Eva Hudson playing 6 rotations OH. Myers and Colvin at Middle. Schermerhorn at Libero.
2nd set more of the same. Iowa transfer at middle, Torrence at DS. Flipped which setter was with which opposite.
Third set: Chinn OH with Brown DS and Hornung Libero. Myers back at middle. Renner setting. Koch 6ro opp
Fourth set: Ellis (1) and Hudson (2) at OH l. Renner setting front row Balensiefer setting from back row. Koch 6ro opp. Libero was Schermerhorn and DS was Hornung.
My thoughts: the first three sets were all so close, 2 point differentials. The practice players terminated at a good clip so sometimes it’s hard to gather info. The fourth set the starting side lost and by a decent margin. It never felt close watching. I think Chinn at OH, Myers, and Renner in the 5-1 are my favorite. Although in that fourth set Clayton on the non starting side looked good. I can see her and Myers splitting time at least to start the season. Hudson will be a 6 rotation OH right away. She is very productive offensively and passes and defends well. I think it is a good investment. Chinn looks good and when she is in the front row she pulls back to pass. I am so happy to see a three person passing formation all the time. Ellis cannot do that, especially when Koch is 6 rotations. Koch really does look like a different player this fall l. She has lead the team in kills in both scrimmages and hit above .300 even with all the movement going on in lineups. Chinn looks more terminal than in the past and has been a fantastic blocker. I really like how quick Balensiefer moves to the ball, and I agree she has swagger, but I prefer Renner and think she looks more polished.
If you have specific questions, please ask. I didn’t do very good with breaking down my thoughts. I’ve been really busy lately and very invested in PanAms and coaching my teams.

Thank you, b1gnetwerth! You're an absolute rockstar and no need to apologize. You don't owe us anything. Your recap was great and very informative. I'm shocked (but very happy) that Koch will probably be our 6-rotation player this year, with Hudson possibly joining her. Sounds like it'll be a battle between Ellis and Chinn for that 2nd OH spot. Excited to see a healthier Chinn out there passing. Really hope it's not a 6-2 or 5-2, only because you lose so many subs that way. But you gotta do what you gotta do! 🤷🏾♂️ As far as liberos/defensive specialists: did you think anyone stood out more?

Schermerhorn appears to me to be #1. Not only has she improved a lot, but her body language, confidence, and leadership is well above the pack. Alli Hornung really has grown so much though, and I am thrilled to see it. I am surprised by Ava Torrence and I would put her at 3 on the depth chart followed by Brown.
Also, I have seen rotations where they play Chinn 6 rotations on the outside and they DS Koch.
I did not include much about non-starters but Warren is a really solid player. I would think she would redshirt. Her athleticism is incredible; she can fly. Carr is someone I did not know much about, and honestly is not far off from the other two if not maybe ahead in some aspects. I would think she would want to maximize her development too and redshirt? I have no inside details on this it’s just what I would think with current depth and both of those players having so much upside. Yim is a solid player. I think she is great teammate to have in that third setter slot. Rastovski has improved a lot, and I can see her contributing in the future with the strides she has made.

Coach Shondell did speak highly of Carr and Warren. I wouldn’t be surprised if they both redshirted since Myers and Colvin probably have that spot locked down. I am surprised about how low you have Brown. She was the starting libero at Missouri. I am glad to hear about what you said about Schemerhorn. Thanks for the two great posts. I liked reading them both .

I think re: back row, the difference between 1-4 is a lot smaller than you’ve seen in the past. Schermerhorn is solid, Hornung might be right behind her (coin flip) because we’ve seen her a lot, then I’d put Brown due to her experience, and Torrance 4th. Having said that, I might flip Brown above Hornung because of her L experience at Mizzou. I don’t have enough evidence to give the L to Torrance yet. But I wouldn’t be scared to see any of those three in the L spot.

Purdue takes set 1 (25-23)
A very back and forth set. Purdue's offense is solely Hudson - 7-0-11 (.636) in just the 1st set! Schermerhorn had 8 digs in that set.

Other notes: For the first full rotation, Purdue went with last year's configuration - Koch (OPP) played the front row, served, then played one back row rotation before Brown came in. But, since Purdue got stuck with her back row (she missed her serve and a back row attack), they subbed Brown in on Koch's next serve.
Chinn is passing when front court.

Welcome to college volleyball, Eva Hudson! Her playing so far has basically told the Seniors, "I'll take one of those spots, thank you very much."
Great numbers for her first set of collegiate volleyball.

Listening to the Purdue Vs. Bowling Green match being called by Kyle Shondell. I am very impressed by Eva Hudson. It is WAY too early to say, but she gives me Ariel Turner vibes. She is doing a lot…digging, blocking, killing, and serving.

Through 2 sets:
Hudson - 14-1-24 (.542) Clayton - 4-0-5 (.800) Colvin - 5-2-11 (.273)
Koch and Chinn are struggling offensively, but Koch has 4 blocks. Schermerhorn has 13 digs and has been aced 3 times.
