Although it’s not the first time Sesame Street has used a muppet to represent a particular ethnic group (Roosevelt Franklin), it seems a little forced to me. Part of the reason for human cast members should be to reflect human diversity. The show has done this from the start or at least for as long as I’ve been watching. That being said, it doesn’t really move the needle to much for me, other than, like I said, it being transparently forced. For something that doesn’t move the needle for you, that’s a pretty strong take. At any rate, why do you believe it was “forced,” and in your mind are there any reasons the production company may have felt compelled to introduce an Asian character? I didn't think my take was strong at all. In light of the violence aimed towards Asian Americans this past year (and for the many, many, MANY years before that) I get what the production company was trying to accomplish. This show was near and dear to me as a little kid. I loved Roosevelt Franklin because he was basically the "Black" muppet and I wouldn't want to deprive an Asian American kid that experience of being reflected in a show. At the same time this show was groundbreaking in its diverse human cast, and I connected with Gordon and Susan just as much. I also loved Bob, Luis, Maria, and Mr. Hooper. As I said in my other post, I don't question the action of having an Asian American muppet, I just question the motivation and sincerity of the decision. Hopefully it's for representation and not tokenism.

what does that even mean? Why would you question the motivation of this character?

Representation and tokenism here is a bit hypocritical in a righty mouth, rightwing MPs use the same "representation and tokenism" concepts for cultural protectionism, sometimes it even explodes to their faces: in 1993 french republican government (Edouard Balladur) passed a law saying at least 40% of all the music aired on radio stations shall be in french language. They even gave susbsidies for setting up french indie labels so they could struggle against majors.
Guess what happened ? the ones who created indie labels and took the money were mostly the immigrants sons, those living in the rioting suburbs at that time, from jobless poor families. That's how french spoken rap emerged, with west africans black people, maghrebians, and so on...
How cruel protectionism and "representation and tokenism" can be sometimes hahaha
