And this year is worse than usual.
Just for anyone that needs to rant, decompress or vent.
I've never seen anything like what is happening this year: how early it started (completely against region rules), the overt meddling, lack of loyalty and manipulation are all absolutely out of control. One could have hoped that the COVID years would have brought a little perspective but it only seems to have made things worse.
Good luck at Nationals to all the kids getting pushed out the door and already being actively replaced at your club by your current or upcoming coach.
If your kids can survive this, college recruiting will be a piece of cake.
Please, other parts of the country, do not follow the North Texas model. It is broken.
(And just to be clear, this isn't sour grapes about my kid. This has not affected us, but it's crushing to watch teammates and friends already going through this.)
If you need a place to vent and support, this is your place.

Sounds terrible. I’m surprised tryouts for next year are happening before Nationals. I know several states are going to the summer tryout model, but I haven’t seen any happening before Nationals, unless it’s a tryout for Nationals (in the case of players that decided not to go with the team and left vacancies that needed to be filled).

Tryouts aren't until the weekend following Nationals but all the top teams are being assembled right now so kids are getting ready for nationals but also going to other clubs and doing private workouts to find out what team they are going to be on next season. None of this is really supposed to be happening until later and offers outside of your own club aren't really allowed to happen until that weekend after Nationals but it's all happening now. It's tough to watch.

I think all clubs hold their "clinics" so players can come and improve their skills. Everyone knows these "clinics" are open tryouts for girls to show their talents to other club coaches or see if the grass is greener.

Now that 17s and 16s are the same wave at USAV, Ping is gonna need scouts to watch 16 Open while he’s coaching!

I don't wish the coercion, manipulation, and pressure of North Texas "clinics" (aka tryouts that they say are not really tryouts) on anyone. Good luck to future kids. Send me a message if you have an idea to change things and I'll brainstorm with you.

Here in norcal they host "open gyms" the week prior to tryouts then if you don't get a wink wink or whisper you go tryout at another club during the actual tryout time

Name names and take them to the Region… Only if we got rid of all the clubs that broke the rules, there would be no clubs left. Not trying to sound "Holier than thou" but, in Minnesota tryouts don't start until after the High School Season. Most of the clubs do a fairly good job at not promising spots to girls (especially if that girl is from a rival club and is thinking of switching) but sometimes where a girl will land is heavily hinted at. I've about the feeding frenzy that sometimes happens in other States and have been grateful that it's not like that here. Conversely though, I feel like our later start has us trying to play 'catch up' with most of the other clubs until mid-March or so. |

I don't understand the rationale behind holding tryouts sooo far in advance. NTR used to hold tryouts in November. About 5 years ago it changed. From my understanding it was because they wanted tryouts done before school ball started, but it has been a train wreck IMO. |

I'm in MN and back when a player I know was moving to 17s she went to a couple "Open Gyms" suggested by her HS coach that resulted in a not veiled at all email before the tryouts. We hadn't been at the better clubs before so at the time I had no idea how far outside the lines it was. And if you're taking about how few shenanigans happen in MN then please don't look into that MN Select 18 Open national champion team from 2015-16 because precious few of those players were at Select the year before. They came from several clubs, multiple age groups and ended up with only one 18 year old on the team (and 15 year old CC McGraw) but goodness could they play. |
