Just when you thought things couldn't get worse with NTR tryouts...they move the date up. I've heard of one club already giving offers to their current players, trying to lock them in for next season. Imagine being one of the players not given that automatic invite?! How are you supposed to stay loyal and play for a team/club that has already written you off. Qualifier season has just started. I can't help but think this is going to be disastrous. I really wish USAV/AAU/JVA/NFHS would step in and add some regulations. There’s no reason any of us (clubs) should be talking to kids about 2025 until December of 2024. I’d love to see a national rule saying no offers or tryouts until Dec 1. While I’m living in fantasy land, I’d also like to move GJNC to Memorial Day weekend. But seriously, giving kids offers before their season is over (or even half way competed) is ridiculous. But you know what they say… “Everything is ridiculous in Texas.” Or something like that.

Many regions around the country have moved to this new format, I'll bet all do by 2026. It was introduced to the Southern Region last year and there are some things I like about it, but overall it is an unmitigated nightmare for the families, players and high schools on many levels. Very selfish and irresponsible on the region's part. I would fully support a more top down org structure from USAV.

Correct. That is the new/current policy. I was hoping this would mean clubs would abide by that date since it's earlier than what was allowed in years past. Silly me. Nope, it just means certain clubs have started their non-binding offers in March.

It is interesting that NTR moved the date up and effectively threw up their hands and said, the under the table recruiting is already happening so instead of policing it, let's just make it ok. The unintended consequence is what you said, now they are starting even earlier. At least before you were messing up one qualifier at the end of the season and then Nationals. Starting before qualifier season really gets going is a terrible situation. Can't imagine a player being a dead man walking for about half the season. What a miserable position to be in and definitely not optimal for growth. There's also going to be this long window between when verbals happen and then when actual signing occurs. There's gonna be some really nasty stuff happen during that stretch from both sides, players collecting offers and then when something better comes a long, take the next one and there will be ongoing recruiting by the clubs to improve their teams. The region should just make signing happen when the offers can happen. That would at least create some sort of real commitment. The whole process brings out the worst in everyone. It's truly sad to be a part of and watch. Just wondering when NTR will implement their transfer portal window to allow full chaos and anarchy to rain in the region.

USA tried to hold to certain things and the JVA was born. They tried to hold to certain things with the boys, and many of them went to AAU. We are only as faithful as our options, so it's difficult to enforce your restrictions when someone else is out there charging less, requiring less, and interfering in your business less.

With tryouts coming soon, what’s the latest gossip for this region? There seems to always be turnover and drama between these clubs heading into tryouts.

Teams are already picked for next year and have been for at least a couple of months. Couple of clubs are adding additional teams that are going to try to compete in Open. I don’t have scoop on any gossip this year.

I don’t have scoop on any gossip this year. Had an experience this weekend with a club coach/asst director. He's about to coach his 15's, he's telling me about some athletes I should watch and he mentions kids on another team. I'm like, 'O ya, are they gonna try out for you next year?' He says 'O they've already signed, they'll be our L and OH1.' Then I look over at his team who's about to warmup thinking, what a tough deal to play for a guy/team when you know they've already replaced you. Or the other team, playing with teammates you know have already bailed on you. Did the window move before Nationals just to make something that was happening illegally already, legal?

Yeah the window pretty much just made it legal to do what was already happening. Except for all that did was move the secret offers up even sooner. I heard Madfrog told their current players right after the first qualifier, if they were going to be asked back for the next season. Brutal to have to finish out with a team that had already decided you weren’t good enough for them. This year, May 6 was the magic day that a club was able to give a verbal offer to a player. May 6, top teams were already formed and everyone knows it. Actual tryouts are this weekend but the teams have been formed for months

Where is Skyline going to be next season? What happened to their lease? They will still be in SWAC. They have a multi year lease option on the building. Only their offices relocated.
